Power Supply Update

Operating Margin : - 388 MW (Negative)
Available Capacity: 2,187 MW
Peak Demand: 2,575 MW

With the shortage of Power Supply and zero import power from the Mindanao grid, the NGCP has issued a Red Alert and will implement Manual Load Dropping (Outage) in the Visayas area.

This will be implemented depending on the real-time status of the power grid.

NGCP may implement Manual Load Dropping (MLD) in the following areas today, 3 September, to maintain the integrity of the power system:

โš ๏ธPOWER SUPPLY UPDATE โš ๏ธ
As of the latest information from NGCP, the Visayas Grid remains under a critical power situation.

Operating Margin: -416 MW [๐——๐—˜๐—™๐—œ๐—–๐—œ๐—ง]
Available Capacity: 2,139 MW
Peak Demand: 2,555 MW

To better understand the situation, it is important to clarify the roles of the different players in the power industry:

MECO is an electric distribution utility. We purchase electricity from power generation companies and deliver the electricity to our consumers through our distribution system.

NGCP (National Grid Corporation of the Philippines), on the other hand, operates and maintains the country's transmission grid. It is responsible for transmitting electricity from power generators to electric distribution utilities such as MECO, VECO, MERALCO, and others.

Since MECO is only buying power from the supplier, we do not set the cost of the electricity that we purchase or the cost of transmitting it to our system.
The cost of purchasing electricity from Power Generation Companies and the cost of transmitting that electricity through NGCP's transmission system are pass-through charges. These amounts are collected through your electricity bill and subsequently paid to the respective power generators and NGCP.

These charges can be found under Subtotal 1 of your MECO bill.

Because the cost of power and its transmission changes from month to month, the electricity rate you see on your bill may also increase or decrease depending on the prevailing cost of power and transmission.

In simple terms: when the cost of power we purchase and transmit goes up, your electricity rate may go up; when these costs go down, your rate may also go down. These pass-through charges are not earnings of MECO.
Think of MECO as the delivery guy whom you are paying via COD. The cost of the product is paid to the supplier while MECO only collects the Distribution Charge as seen in Subtotal 2 of your bill.

At present, the available power supply in the Visayas Grid is insufficient to meet the demand. Because demand is higher than the available capacity, NGCP requires electric distribution utilities in the Visayas, including MECO, to implement load shedding to help protect the stability of the power grid and prevent more serious and prolonged system problems.

We understand the frustration and inconvenience caused by these power interruptions. Please know that these load-shedding requirements are not initiated by MECO, nor are they implemented by choice. MECO is required to comply with the directives of NGCP to help maintain the stability and integrity of the entire power grid.

NGCP has also provided its power supply outlook for tomorrow, which MECO will use in preparing for possible load-shedding requirements.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone's patience and understanding.

MECO continues to closely coordinate with NGCP and will provide updates as soon as new information becomes available.
