Shaping tomorrowβs leaders, one idea at a time! π
Yesterday, November 19, 2024, the Childrenβs Congress held at the Llorente Evacuation Center brought together a passionate group of young voices from various schools across the Municipality, united in their mission to discuss issues that matter most to them and their communities. The event provided an empowering platform for these future leaders to share their hopes, dreams, and ideas for a better world.
The significance of this activity cannot be overstated. By giving children a space to speak up, learn, and engage in meaningful conversations, we are fostering a generation that understands the importance of child protection, social responsibility, and advocacy. This congress not only strengthens the voices of young people but also encourages them to take an active role in shaping policies that directly affect their lives. It is a crucial step in empowering the youth to become advocates for themselves, their peers, and their communities.
The day kicked off with MLGOO Gemma Amit, who delivered the rationale for the activity, setting the tone with an inspiring message that encouraged the youth to take action and make their voices heard. She also provided valuable technical assistance to ensure the smooth flow and success of the event.
Participants had the opportunity to dive into important discussions on crucial child protection topics, including: the Safe Spaces Act, presented by Doreen Faye Castro, RSW, from Plan International Pilipinas (Llorente); the Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC), addressed by Margie Boco, RSW, MSWDO Staff; Child Abuse, discussed by Rosnil Saua-an, RSW, SWO I; and the Rights and Responsibilities of a Child, shared by LYDO Zaira Bocar. These thought-provoking sessions gave the children a deeper understanding of their rights and the importance of advocating for a safer, more inclusive society.
The congress also included engaging ideation activities designed to spark creativity and expression, such as "Expressing Issues and Concerns Through Arts" and "Picture Storytelling." These activities allowed the participants to visually communicate the challenges they face, while also empowering them to think critically about solutions and the role they play in bringing about change.
One of the key highlights of the day was the election of two child representatives, who will serve as advocates for childrenβs rights and act as vital voices in raising crucial issues as members of the Municipal Child Protection Council. These elected representatives will be instrumental in bridging the gap between children and local policymakers, ensuring that the voices of the youth are heard in important decision-making processes.
This congress not only gives the children and youth an opportunity to contribute to the conversation but also helps to build a stronger, more responsive community where the rights and welfare of children are at the forefront. It is a powerful reminder that when young people are given the tools, the knowledge, and the support to advocate for themselves, they can help shape a better future for everyone.
Overall, it was a day of empowerment, education, and unity, filled with inspiring moments and a shared commitment to building a brighter, more just future. As we celebrate these young leaders, we are reminded that they are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but the change-makers of today. ππͺ
