The Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-Southern Leyte Provincial Office, in partnership with the Associated Media of Southern Leyte (AMSL) and the Communicators Network-Southern Leyte (ComNet-SL), is organizing a Training Seminar on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related emerging trends.

The training is in collaboration with the Southern Leyte State University Extension Service, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and the Local Government Unit of Maasin City.

The activity serves as one of the highlights of this year’s celebration of Press Freedom Week (PFW), scheduled on October 12–15, 2026, and will be attended by designated Information Officers from city offices, National Government Agencies (NGAs), Local Government Units (LGUs), and members of AMSL.

Venue for the training is at CADAC building, Barangay Combado, Maasin City. Invited as expert resource speaker on the culmination day is PIA Regional Head Reyan Arinto.

Arinto is expected to share deep insight and valuable experience with the participants on the evolving role of communicators and media practitioners in protecting press freedom while promoting communication in this time of massive use of digitization, especially AI.

This year’s Press Freedom Week carries the theme, “Press Freedom in a Digital Era: Empowering Responsible and Creative Communication.” (MMP, with tarp design by the City of Maasin)

Mayor Lemuel Honor of the Municipality of Silago signed Executive Order No. 38, declaring the suspension of classes and work for both public and private schools in the municipality on October 2 in connection with the observance of World Teachers' Day.

Related activities are scheduled to be undertaken in honor and recognition of the valuable contributions of teachers in Philippine society and national development, hence the need to declare work suspension for the academe sector, the EO said, among other purposes.

A total of 14,726 families in six municipalities of Southern Leyte have received rice assistance under the Local Government Support Fund (LGSF) rice distribution program implemented by the Provincial Government of Southern Leyte.

The beneficiaries are from San Juan, Anahawan, St. Bernard, San Ricardo, Pintuyan, and San Francisco, with each beneficiary receiving 10 kilograms of rice.

The assistance forms part of the LGSF-Financial Assistance to Local Government Units (LGSF-FALGUs), a national government fund intended to support local governments in implementing programs and projects responsive to the needs of their communities.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Southern Leyte Chapter, in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) provincial office, will conduct a series of Occupational First Aid Training sessions this September in Maasin City.

The two-day trainings are scheduled on September 14-15, 22-23, 24-25, and 29-30 at the PRC Function Room in Barangay Abgao, Maasin City.

The training will cover Occupational First Aid, including Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), to equip participants with essential skills in responding to workplace emergencies and providing immediate care.

PRC Southern Leyte encouraged interested individuals and establishments to register early and secure their slots.
