Earlier this week, a Philippine flag retirement ceremony was conducted and led by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) to give final respect to worn-out flags. In line with this, amendments are being proposed to retire old flags not through burning, but through the recycling and physical disintegration of their fibers. This approach preserves the respect and honor accorded to the Philippine flag while promoting an eco-friendly alternative.

In a major step toward shaping the province’s future, CONVERGENCE: Bringing Together National Government Agencies for Coherent STI Planning and Action took place on May 22 at the Camiguin Highland Resort. The strategic forum gathered representatives from 18 National Government Agencies (NGAs) to forge stronger inter-agency alliances and align development initiatives, marking a pivotal milestone in the ongoing creation of the Camiguin Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Plan.

Following the series of STI municipal consultations across the province, the identified strengths, challenges, opportunities, and aspirations from the local stakeholders were presented to the National Government Agencies (NGAs) for dialogue, validation, and harmonization of interventions. The session aligned existing programs and mapped out collaborative interventions to streamline development efforts and eliminate fragmented, siloed operations.

The convergence emphasized the vital role of NGAs in the STI Planning process, recognizing that Science, Technology, and Innovation are cross-cutting concerns that influence various sectors including agriculture, education, environment, infrastructure, health, tourism, and the economy. Through strengthened collaboration, agencies can collectively address gaps and ensure that all identified challenges in the province are strategically responded to.

Throughout the event, participating agencies mapped out their current programs to ensure direct alignment with Camiguin’s strategic priorities. The forum also served as a matchmaking platform, capturing vital expressions of interest to fuel future inter-agency partnerships and coordinated project rollouts. Looking toward long-term growth, the agencies laid the groundwork for commodity roadmaps dedicated to key provincial products and industries—a crucial step forward for Camiguin’s innovation agenda.

As the STI planning process moves forward, the next milestone will be presenting the draft Camiguin Science, Technology, and Innovation Plan to the Provincial Government of Camiguin for deliberation, refinement, and eventual adoption.

The activity highlights the commitment of the National Government Agencies in supporting the Provincial Government of Camiguin and its local government units in building a more responsive, coherent, inclusive, and innovation-driven future for the island province.

For 2 BSBA Major in Human Resource Management and 2 BS Information Technology students of Camiguin Polytechnic State College (CPSC), the journey wasn't easy. Balancing academic demands while navigating a real government workplace, supporting operations, and contributing to science and technology service delivery, takes more than textbook knowledge. It takes commitment, adaptability, and heart.

That's exactly what these four interns brought to DOST Camiguin every single day for 600 hours, beginning January 28, 2026.

And we mean it when we say, your stay with DOST Camiguin has been a great help to us. Every task completed, every report submitted, every initiative supported, it made a real difference in how we serve our community. You were not just observers. You were contributors.

At DOST, we don't just process papers, we build futures. And part of that mission is opening our doors to the next generation of Filipino professionals, giving them a space to grow, contribute, and discover what they are truly capable of.

To our CPSC interns: you didn't just complete your required hours. You became part of our team. And now you carry with you not just a certificate, but the experience, the confidence, and the proof that you belong in spaces that matter.

The science of building a better Philippines needs people like you.

Don't stop here, keep showing up, keep learning, and keep growing. The country needs HRM professionals who understand innovation, and IT graduates who understand public service.

The newly appointed Regional Director of DOST Northern Mindanao, Dr. Mark Lemuel L. Garcia, paid a courtesy visit to Camiguin Governor Hon. Xavier Jesus D. Romualdo on May 20, 2026, at the Office of the Provincial Governor, New Capitol Building, Mambajao, Camiguin, together with the DOST Camiguin personnel.

The meeting reaffirmed the strong collaboration between DOST and the Provincial Government of Camiguin in advancing Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI)-driven development initiatives for the island province. Discussions highlighted preparations for the upcoming Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) 2026 and strategic directions for STI Planning in Camiguin.

Through strengthened partnerships and shared commitment, DOST continues to serve as a catalyst for inclusive growth, empowering communities and creating opportunities through science, technology, and innovation.
