The government will provide jobs to 243,000 workers nationwide under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) Program for Brigada Eskwela beginning today (June 1), helping prepare public schools for the opening of classes while providing income support to Filipino families.
This is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s directive to ensure that classrooms and learning facilities are ready, safe, and conducive to learning ahead of the June 8 back-to-school.
Executive Secretary Ralph G. Recto said the initiative also demonstrates how government resources can simultaneously address the needs of Filipino families.
From June 1 to 5, TUPAD beneficiaries will be deployed to public schools across the country and receive PHP 5,000 in compensation for participating in school preparation and improvement activities.
Their tasks include classroom cleaning, waste management, hauling of furniture and learning materials, vegetation clearing, landscaping, repainting, and other non-technical campus improvement works.
The initial rollout covers 5,000 priority schools, including large, mega, and geographically isolated and disadvantaged area (GIDA) schools in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
The nationwide deployment follows a coordination meeting held on May 27 among Executive Secretary Recto, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Francis Tolentino, and senior officials of the Department of Education (DepEd) to ensure the timely and organized implementation of the TUPAD-Brigada Eskwela program.
During the meeting, Recto assured Secretary Tolentino and DepEd officials of the full support of the Office of the Executive Secretary in advancing key employment, education, and social protection initiatives of the departments.
