The once-controlled outbreak is now starting to reemerge. In recent news, the hantavirus infections are now starting to re-circulate all over the world. While a specific cure was not yet formulated, health agencies urged individuals to be cautious.

On May 6, 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) published an article on the hantavirus, as Andes virusโ€”a type of hantavirusโ€”infections affected passengers and crews on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

Hantaviruses are a group of viruses that are zoonotic viruses that naturally infect rodents. They typically present in rodent reservoir species, in these species for a long time without apparent illness, and are occasionally transmitted to humans, but in documented cases, thousands of infections have been recorded. These viruses can cause severe disease in humans and can cause a range of illnesses, which typically involve fever, headache, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain and nausea or vomiting, depending on the type of virus. These viruses belong to the family Hantaviridae, within the order of Bunyarirales. The transmission of hantavirus to humans occurs from contact with urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents, and in less common situations, infection may occur from rodent bites. Moreover, exposure risk may rise in activities involving contact with rodents, like cleaning enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, farming, forestry work, and sleeping in rodent-infested areas. While human-to-human may be a rare case, when infection occurs, transmission between people has been associated with close and prolonged contact, particularly among household members or intimate partners, and appears more likely during the early phase of illness, where the virus is more transmissible.

As recorded by WHO, there are two known syndromes resulting from hantavirus: hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), a rapidly progressive condition affecting the lungs and heart, which is relevant in the Americas. Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Europe and Asia primarily affects the kidneys and blood vessels. In these two syndromes, HFRS, in human-to-human transmission, has not been documented, with a case fatality rate of 1-15%, while HCPS is a more severe illness and known to cause human-to-human transmission, with a case fatality rate up to 50%.

East Asia, particularly China and the Republic of Korea, has continuously experienced thousands of HFRS infections annually, although incidence has declined in recent decades. Furthermore, in Europe, mainly in northern and central regions, several thousand cases have been reported each year, where Puumal virusโ€”another type of hantavirusโ€”circulates.

On the other part of the world, the Americas have experienced HCPS but is much rarer, with hundreds of cases reported each year across the continent having fewer than 1,000 cases in the United States of America (USA), while South America such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Paraguay reports small number of cases annually but is more fatal, making the disease a major public health concern. An estimation of 10,000 to 100,000 infections was recorded each year globally, with the largest burden in Europe and Asia.

In terms of their diagnosis, it became quite challenging to classify the infections due to their similarities to illnesses like COVID-19, viral pneumonia, leptospirosis, dengue, or sepsis, having symptoms like fever and vomiting. As stated by the article, laboratory confirmation only relies on serological testing in detecting hantavirus-specific IgM antibodies or rising IgG titres, as well as molecular methods such as reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) during the acute phase of illness, when viral RNA may be detectable in blood.

While there is no licensed specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for hantavirus infection, WHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have worked with different allying agencies to strengthen surveillance, laboratory capacity, risk communication and community engagement, early detection, patient care and outbreak response for hantavirus infections by developing and updating evidence-based guidance on diagnosis, case management, infection prevention and control, and contact tracing. The WHO also emphasized that the Andes virus is very low when appropriate infection prevention and control measures are applied.

These preventive steps not only benefit one person, but also benefit every individual living on this planet. While a specific cure is not available, it is important to follow preventive steps and precautions because such action is not just merely following instructions but a societal imperative.

Despite earlier assurances from Iran regarding the safe passage of Philippine-bound vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, seven Filipino seafarers were injured after their ship was reportedly struck by an Iranian drone attack on May 5.

The injured Filipinos were crew members of the Maltese-flagged container ship CMA CGM San Antonio, which was initially reported by some foreign media outlets as a French vessel.

โ€œFour of them have relatively minor injuries, while three are in more serious condition and are being closely monitored,โ€ Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said.

Despite the incident, two injured Filipino seafarers returned to the Philippines on May 15 after receiving medical treatment in Oman and received initial financial assistance from the government.

โ€œThe good news is everyone is recuperating,โ€ Cacdac told reporters during a media briefing at the airport, adding that five others are still recovering in Oman.

Furthermore, the DMW assured that all seven injured crew members continue to receive their salaries and family allotments while hospitalized.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the worldโ€™s most vital shipping routes for oil and global trade amid escalating geopolitical tensions, with commercial vessels remaining vulnerable despite ongoing diplomatic negotiations.

A certain graphic has been circulating online of an alleged Global Defense Agency Director Cecil Stedman, demanding the court to release Duterte, with various social media users sharing the post with hopeful cheers.

According to โ€˜Stedmanโ€™, detaining Duterte is a liability that we cannot afford, because of his courage to make hard decisions.

Various fact-checking websites and tools such as Vera Files, released a statement regarding the legitimacy of the post, with Vera Files ultimately claiming the post to be AI-generated.

As per Vera Files, one of the photos appear to be 99.9% AI-generated, while one of the posted reels revealed a 98.2% likelihood of being a deepfake video, with the website utilizing an AI-detection tool called Hive Moderation.

Moreover, Vera Files added that there is no Global Defense Agency Director, with โ€˜Cecil Stedmanโ€™ being a fictional character in the American animated TV series, Invincible.

Meanwhile, following the recent request for an interim release by Duterteโ€™s team, the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court, by majority, denied the aforementioned appeal last April 2026.

Duterteโ€™s camp sets their eyes on Peter Haynes to replace Kaufman as his legal counsel last May 11, 2026, following Kaufmanโ€™s withdrawal

Twelve former members of the defunct Dawlah Islamiya and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) voluntarily surrendered to Philippine Army units in Maguindanao del Sur within three days, military officials confirmed Saturday, May 9.

Five Dawlah Islamiya members first pledged allegiance to the government during a symbolic surrender ceremony held Monday at the headquarters of the Armyโ€™s 1st Mechanized Battalion in Barangay Midtimbang, Datu Anggal Midtimbang.

The surrenderers were identified as Alih Samat, Morad Ali, Guialudin Salipada, Tohami Maguid, and Diya Dagadas.

According to Major Gen. Jose Vladimir Cagara, commander of the Armyโ€™s 6th Infantry Division, the surrender was made possible through the joint efforts of military officials, local government leaders, and Moro community elders.

Before formally surrendering, the five militants turned over several fi****ms, including a Barrett sniper rifle, an M1 Garand rifle, two submachine guns, and an M79 gr***de launcher.

In a separate ceremony held Thursday at the headquarters of the Armyโ€™s 90th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Kabengi, Datu Saudi Ampatuan, seven more former members of Dawlah Islamiya and BIFF also surrendered to authorities.

Military officials said four of the seven were skilled in assembling improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The group also yielded high-powered fi****ms, mortars, bomb-making materials, and explosive components.

The former extremists vowed to support government peace initiatives and help convince their remaining companions to surrender and return to peaceful communities.

Authorities assured the surrenderers of assistance and reintegration programs through the cooperation of the Bangsamoro regional government and local government units in the province.

Alcohol and substance use are just some of the behaviors that serve as a response to regulating stress in times of adversity. Due to the different stress responses of every individual when facing challenges, multiple frameworks and theories have been formulated to address and understand those behaviors reflected. However, it raises a disparity between numerous concepts due to the inconsistencies, which limits cross-study synthesis.

Many studies have focused on how resilience works, but reflect a deeper conceptual disagreement about whether resilience is a stable trait, a dynamic process, a set of protective resources, or an outcome of successful adaptation that resulted in inconsistency in structures and divergent construct definitions even among scales nominally assessing similar phenomena. Moreover, in terms of flight versus freeze, many instruments and theories in stress response processes have been created; however, many concepts and operational heterogeneity complicate the aggregation of evidence about any one response type and obscure meaningful distinctions among them. Meanwhile, resistance and strategic assimilation or appeasement remain under-theorized, especially outside of stigma or identity-based frameworks. There is no current โ€œgold standardโ€ measure, and substantial gaps in validation evidence across scales.

These patterns suggest a greater need for extensive conceptual frameworks in identifying intervention targets and understanding how stress response shapes substance use trajectories in the context of adversity.

Because of these disparities, an article published in the National Library of Medicine titled โ€œFight, Flight, Fawn, Freeze: Rethinking Substance Use Through a Stress Response Lensโ€ by Angel B. Algarin et al., from Arizona State University, USA, have provided a stress response framework on understanding substance use in the context of adversity by integrating fight (resistance), flight (adaptive coping), freeze (maladaptive coping), and fawn (strategic assimilation/appeasement) responses, with resilience as a moderating factor.

In recent findings, adaptive resistance and coping can protect against substance use, while maladaptive resistance, maladaptive coping, and fawning increase the chances of long-term risk despite short-term relief.

Algarin integrated both the 4Fs (Fight, Flight, Fawn, Freeze) Model, which emphasizes the acute neurobiological response without explicit attention to social context, and the Minority Stress Model, which often conceptualizes stress responses as socially embedded and dynamic processes.

Through the help of community-based interventions like the Community Wise, results showed that in substance use contexts, adaptive resistance may be expressed by individuals who, despite exposure to high-risk environments, choose not to engage in substance use. This can be seen as a form of agency that reflects a proactive stance shaped by identity, cultural values, and critical consciousness. The article also cited that while adaptive resistance can help in mitigating risks, it may also manifest maladaptive responses, which they conceptualized as reactive or dysregulated responses, such as impulsive anger, aggression, or violence, that may instead exacerbate substance use risk. Moreover, in Adaptive coping, recent evidence strengthens the protective relationship between mindfulness, cognitive reappraisal, and help-seeking: higher trait mindfulness is associated with lower prevalence of substance use disorders in adolescents, while formal help-seeking through screening and brief intervention programs shows sustained protective effects up to seven years post-intervention.

Furthermore, freeze or maladaptive coping, including denial, emotional suppression, or substance use, is consistently linked to a greater risk for substance misuse. People with limited access to mental healthcare or healthcare in general, social support, or economic stability may turn to substances as a way to self-soothe or manage overwhelming feelings. In addition, while Fawn or the strategic assimilation/appeasement may offer short-term relief or access to resources, it can result in internal dissonance, depleted self-concept, and long-term stress. Unlike resistance, which pushes back against adversity, or coping, which seeks to manage it, fawning is a compliance-based survival strategyโ€”one that may shield individuals in the short term but ultimately reinforces the systems and narratives that sustain harm.

The article also cited that resilience is a modifier and a buffer in times of adversity by helping individuals regulate emotional and physiological responses and enhancing adaptive coping and reinforcing values-driven resistance. In vulnerable communities, especially those marginalized, collective resilience, including spiritual practices and socialization, plays a crucial role among ethnic minority youth, family-based resilience strategies that combine both emotional and social support against systemic adversity.

The authors emphasized that it is important for context-sensitive interventions to go beyond individual-level pathology and account for sociocultural and cultural environments in which stress responses are formed and deployed. In this advanced era, research on adversity and substance use requires an extensive understanding and assessment, validated measures, and greater theorization of resistance and fawning/strategic assimilation in capturing multiple stress responses and their interactions. Recognizing different factors and different responses is key to designing interventions that are empathetic, targeted, and just.

Across the Middle East, a silent crisis is intensifying beneath the noise of missiles and geopolitics. While oil has long been the center of conflict, water is emerging as the regionโ€™s most fragile and consequential asset. With rising hostilities involving Iran, desalination plants, critical to sustaining life in arid nations, have become both targets and leverage points in a dangerous new dimension of war. However, the roots of this crisis run deeper than conflict alone. The Middle East is the most water-stressed region on Earth, with about ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜† ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€, according to the World Resources Institute. In Iran, years of drought and mismanagement have pushed the country toward what experts call โ€œwater bankruptcy,โ€ with reservoirs in Tehran dropping to just ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฎ% ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† during severe shortages.

To survive, the region has turned to desalination. According to research published in npj Clean Water, the Middle East accounts for nearly ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿณ% ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—น๐—ฑโ€™๐˜€ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†, producing tens of millions of cubic meters of freshwater daily. What was once a technological solution has now become an existential dependency. Entire nations rely on a continuous flow of desalinated water to sustain cities, agriculture, and industry. Yet this reliance has created a dangerous vulnerability. Reports warn that recent military strikes and escalating tensions have already damaged water infrastructure, including desalination plants. As highlighted by Vatican News, nearly ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฌ ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—š๐˜‚๐—น๐—ณ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—น๐˜† ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, meaning that even a single disruption could leave millions without access to drinking water within hours, not just days.

This is where the crisis transforms into something far more alarming. Water is no longer collateral damageโ€”it is becoming a strategic target. Desalination plants, often located along coastlines and dependent on uninterrupted power, are highly exposed and difficult to replace. A single strike can ripple across entire populations, triggering shortages, economic
paralysis, and humanitarian emergencies.

In Iran, the stakes are even higher. Already facing declining rainfall, rising demand, and unsustainable water policies, the country stands at the intersection of environmental collapse and geopolitical conflict. The ongoing war does not create the crisis, it accelerates it. As infrastructure is damaged and resources strained, the fragile balance between supply and survival begins to collapse.

The consequences extend beyond borders. Water insecurity fuels instability, displacing communities, intensifying food shortages, and deepening inequality. History has shown that scarcity can ignite unrest, and in a region as volatile as the Middle East, the weaponization of water risks triggering a cycle of conflict that no nation can contain.

In this unfolding reality, the question is no longer whether the Middle East can secure its water, but whether it can protect it from itself. A system built on fragile infrastructure and political tension cannot sustain long-term stability.

The solution demands more than temporary fixes. Governments must invest in resilient ,decentralized water systems, diversifying supply through wastewater recycling, sustainable groundwater management, and renewable-powered desalination. Regional cooperation, rather than confrontation, must become the cornerstone of water security.

Most importantly, water must be removed from the calculus of war. International frameworks must treat water infrastructure as untouchable, protected not as assets, but as lifelines.

For when water becomes a weapon, survival itself becomes uncertain. And in a region already on edge, the war on water may prove to be the most devastating conflict of all.

Alzheimer's disease is a problem that affects a lot of people all over the world. It is characterized by memory less and is known to get worse over time. It includes problems with thinking and changes in behavior. This disease happens when abnormal proteins build up in the brain, which is bad for brain cells. With all the advances in medicine, there is still no available cure for the disease, resulting in more scientists looking really hard for new and innovative ways to treat it.

One area of research that is new and a little unconventional is the use of blood. For a time people thought menstrual blood was just a waste product, but now it is being studied to see if it can be used to help diagnose and treat diseases, including the incurable Alzheimer's disease.

A special combination of blood, endometrial tissue, cervical mucus, and vaginal fluids makes up menstrual blood. Live endometrial and immune cells, proteins, nucleic acids, and even vaginal microorganisms like Lactobacillus species are all found in menstrual blood. An estimated amount of 300 different proteins are found in menstrual blood that are absent from peripheral blood. It also has cells called menstrual blood-derived stem cells (MenSCs), a type of adult stem cell that can help repair damaged tissues. These cells are special to medicine because they are easy to collect, can change quickly, and are less likely to cause problems with the immune system. Menstrual blood also has different biomarkers and proteins that can provide information about a person's overall health. It can be used to detect diseases such as diabetes, cervical cancer and infections which makes it a valuable tool for diagnosis.

When protein fragments build up in the brain and disrupt the way neurons communicate with each other, this disease occurs. It causes the brain cells to die and the brain to shrink in size. The symptoms of Alzheimer's disease start with memory loss but they can get much worse over time affecting an individual's movements, independence, and personโ€™s daily life overall.

The treatments for Alzheimer's that are available currently can only help manage the symptoms or slow down the progression of the disease. That is why scientists are looking for therapies that can repair or protect brain cells rather than just treating the symptoms.

MenSCs are being studied to see if they can repair damaged tissues and reduce inflammation which are two important factors in Alzheimer's disease. Some studies have shown that these cells may be able to reduce the build up of proteins, protect neurons from damage, and improve cognitive function. This is because the cells release factors that help brain cells survive and regenerate.

๐—›๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐—œ๐˜ ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐˜€
Similar to stem cells taken from bone marrow and umbilical cord blood, stem cells from menstrual blood have shown promising effects in the study of Zhao et al. (2018) on Alzheimerโ€™s disease. When these cells were placed into the brains of mice with Alzheimerโ€™s, they helped reduce harmful substances that damage brain cells. These stem cells work in several ways. They help control a protein called tau, which can become abnormal and damage brain cells when it builds up too much. They also help the brain produce substances that break down another harmful protein called amyloid-beta. The stem cells reduce inflammation in the brain, which helps protect brain cells from further damage. Recent studies show that these stem cells can help reduce the harmful effects of Alzheimerโ€™s disease in the brain. They do this by helping break down toxic protein build up and by preventing another protein from becoming abnormal and damaging brain cells. Because of these abilities, mesenchymal stem cells may play an important role in future treatments for Alzheimer's disease.

Using blood has several advantages over other sources of stem cells. For one, it does not require surgery, which makes it an appealing option for many people. It also avoids the controversy surrounding stem cells. Additionally, menstrual blood is readily available for people who menstruate and it is easier to collect and process. These features make menstrual blood a promising and practical resource for therapies.

๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€
Most of the studies that have been done by scientists have been in laboratories or animal models and there is a clear need for more clinical trials. There is also a need for methods of collecting and testing menstrual blood as well as long-term studies to make sure it is safe and effective for use. Unfortunately, there is still a stigma surrounding menstruation that can make it hard to talk and study about it.

๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—น๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป
The idea of using blood in medical science is a surprisingly new and innovative approach to healthcare. The fact that it has stem cells and other valuable components makes it a promising resource for treating complex diseases like Alzheimer's disease. While there is still a lot of research to be done, menstrual blood may one day play a role in diagnosing and treating diseases. This new field of research is not advancing medical science but it is also changing the way people think about menstrual health. Menstrual blood is no longer something that is thrown away but it is now seen as a valuable resource that can help patients. This is a change in the way people think about something that was once considered disgusting.
