In a testament to human resilience and compassionate community action, a joint effort by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), local responders, and vigilant citizens of Quezon province successfully rescued and safely reunited a 73-year-old fisherman with his family after he survived more than 24 hours adrift at sea.

Mr. Marianito Roldan, a resident of Barangay Suha, Torrijos, Marinduque, began his routine fishing trip in the early morning hours of August 14, 2026, at around 5AM. Only an hour after setting sail, heavy rainfall and rough sea condition capsized his fishing banca in the middle of Tayabas Bay.

Refusing to give up hope, the elderly fisherman detached his boat's outrigger (katig) to use as a makeshift flotation device. Clinging to life through the cold night and ocean currents, Mr. Roldan endured over a day at sea.

Hope finally met him on the morning of August 15. Spotting smoke along the coastline of Sitio Bagong Silang, Barangay Matandang Sabang Kanluran in Catanauan, Quezon, Mr. Roldan gathered his remaining strength to swim ashore. Local copra farmers led by Mr. Johanes Pastorfide and nearby individuals noticed the survivor walking towards them, visibly exhausted.

They immediately assisted in his rescue and coordinated with local authorities to transport him to the hospital in Catanauan for urgent medical attention. An initial medical assessment confirmed he was in stable condition, with only minor bruises and scratches on his knees. He was advised to rest and remain under medical observation.

The rescue effort culminated in an emotional homecoming when Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and Coast Guard Sub-Station in Catanauan, and Coast Guard Sub-Station Torrijos coordinated his repatriation onboard Motorbanca John Harold to safely reunite Mr. Roldan with his waiting family and local officials.

The PCG extends its deepest gratitude to the compassionate residents and local government units of Catanauan, Quezon, for rendering immediate assistance, while continuing to remind all mariners to stay vigilant and heed weather advisories to ensure every journey ends safely at home.
