In celebration of World Seagrass Day, DENR–CENRO Guimbal spearheaded a Coastal Clean-Up Drive and Seagrass Awareness Lecture in Brgy. Kirayan Norte, Miag-ao, Iloilo to raise awareness on the importance of seagrass ecosystems and their role in marine biodiversity, sustainable development, and climate change mitigation.

A total of 80 participants (28 males and 52 females) composed of MENRO Miag-ao personnel, barangay officials, 4Ps beneficiaries, BHWs, BNS, BSPOs, SK officials and youth, fisherfolks, farmers, and local residents actively participated in the activity.

Participants were organized into two teams to ensure systematic shoreline coverage. As a result, 27 sacks of waste with a total weight of 98.5 kilograms were collected, with plastic wrappers identified as the most common type of waste. The collected waste was properly handled and transported by MENRO Miag-ao.

During the short program, EMS II For. Liezel Arabe highlighted the ecological importance of seagrass ecosystems and the significance of celebrating World Seagrass Day. EMS I Sheena Mae Nique of MENRO Miag-ao shared key insights about seagrass and encouraged the community to continuously support environmental protection and conservation initiatives implemented by both local and national government agencies.

Hon. Punong Barangay Ian Glenn D. Norada, Barangay Captain of Kirayan Norte, expressed his gratitude to DENR for choosing their barangay as the venue of the activity. He emphasized that even well-planned initiatives of the LGU and DENR would not succeed without the active participation and support of the community.

The Seagrass Awareness Lecture was delivered by Forest Technician I Lykah S. Pontanes, who discussed the background of World Seagrass Day, the ecological benefits of seagrasses, the 13 seagrass species found in the Philippines, threats to seagrass ecosystems, and ways the community can help protect these valuable marine habitats. Seventy (70) educational flyers were also distributed to further promote awareness.

The activity concluded with the distribution of Certificates of Appreciation to participants in recognition of their active support and commitment to environmental protection.

The Office celebrated the activity with a focus on community involvement, highlighting the importance of small actions that create a significant impact on sustainable development and the protection of coastal areas, including the marine life found therein. The initiative also aimed to strengthen the residents’ sense of responsibility in safeguarding the delicate ecosystems of seagrass beds and coral reefs present and thriving in the area, which represent the richness and abundance of marine biodiversity.

Primarily, we are the main contributors to the threats facing our oceans and seagrass; therefore, we must also be part of the solution. 💚🌊
