Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental The capital of Misamis Occidental started as a small barrio called "Layawan" from 1861 to 1879. The term "Layawan" means "an area or place for strayed animals".

The name was derived from the Cebuano word "Layaw" which translates into "Stray" in English.
