Unity in Patriotism: Namatec BLGU and Namatec ES raise the flag together for the first time
The flag ceremony is more than a routine activityโ€”it is a powerful tradition that teaches learners unity, patriotism, and the values of responsible citizenship, starting as early as kindergarten. This simple act becomes even more meaningful with the active participation of the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU). What was supposed to be just another morning turned into a powerful symbol of partnership and support. The presence of BLGU officials during the ceremony sent a clear message: To the teachersโ€”teach, and we will stand with you. To the learnersโ€”study well, because weโ€™ve got your back.

The BLGU's involvement didnโ€™t stop at attending the ceremony. After the flag-raising, three Barangay officials addressed the students, sharing valuable reminders. They emphasized the importance of cleanliness, reminding students that the school is their second home. They also expressed their commitment to discipline, saying, โ€œBecause we love you, we will not spare the rod if we have toโ€”not only the teachers, but we, your Barangay officials, are here to guide you too.โ€ This powerful show of unity between the school and the local government highlights an inspiring partnership built on care, support, and shared responsibility for the learners' growth.

An Educator's Last Lesson: Honoring Ma'am Elena A. Lucas

โ€œNot all heroes die in battle; some pass on while in service of teaching.โ€

Ms. Elena Andong Lucas, Teacher III of Namatec Elementary School, who served with compassion and dedication has departed from us after 20 years and 9 months of faithful service. And in recognition of her lifelong commitment to education,on this 14th day of August 2025, a ceremonial flag installation was held as a symbol of national honor and respect.

The ceremony was led by SGOD Chief Rosendo Cacap, together with EPS Howard Poking, PSDS W***y Domong-as, Sabangan School Heads, and other DepEd personnel. With deep reverence, the Philippine flag was laid on Ms. Lucasโ€™ casketโ€”an emblem of the sacrifice and devotion she embodied as a public servant and educator.

During the tribute, Mr. Cacap explained the essence of this custom, citing the Heraldic Code of the Philippines and a 2022 provincial ordinance that supports the practice of bestowing the national flag upon the caskets of Department of Education employees. โ€œThe flag symbolizes the commitment, dedication, and sacrifice of a teacher,โ€ he stressed. He also emphasized that this honor is a mandatory recognition for both retired and active DepEd employees. While the responsibility lies with the highest DepEd official in the division, it may also be delegated to the next in authority, a school head, or even a colleague. Importantly, he noted, the ceremony proceeds only with the familyโ€™s consent.

Following this explanation, EPS Howard Poking took charge of leading the proper rites. As the flag was carefully installed by Mr. Cacap, Ms. Evangeline Tomas led the singing of โ€œAng Bayan Ko,โ€ filling the hall with solemn pride. The tribute concluded with the heartfelt rendition of the Sabangan Hymn, offered as the communityโ€™s final farewell.

Through this ceremony, the Department of Education and the Namatec community honored not just the memory of Ms. Lucas, but the noble profession she represented. Indeed, teachers like her may not fall on the battlefield, yet they leave behind a legacy of service no less heroicโ€”shaping lives, nurturing futures, and serving the nation with unwavering devotion with the cause of shaping the hope of the nation, our young people.

Please be guided by the following reminders to ensure the safety of learners and personnel, especially during inclement weather:

When a typhoon signal is raised, please strictly adhere to the official announcements regarding the suspension of face-to-face classesโ€”regardless of whether it is currently raining or not.

In cases where there is no typhoon signal or only Signal No. 1, but your barangay, municipality, or province is experiencing heavy rainfall, coordination with the Local Chief Executive (LCE) is essential in determining whether to suspend face-to-face classes.

Even without an official class suspension, if roads going to school are dangerous (e.g., prone to landslides or flooding), parents are advised not to send their children to school. Learners may stay home and continue their studies using their Learning Activity Sheets (LAS), Self-Learning Modules (SLM), or books. Teachers should always be prepared for possible class suspensions by providing students with appropriate take-home learning tasks.

No learner should be exposed to danger out of fear of being marked absent. Schools should implement Alternative Delivery Modes (ADM) to ensure that learning continues safely.

For all DepEd CAR personnel: if traveling to your work station poses a serious risk to your life, please choose safety first. You may contact your immediate superior to arrange for alternative work arrangements.

Thank you for your cooperation. Let us continue to prioritize safety while ensuring that learning remains uninterrupted.

Stay safe everyone.
