A meaningful time of listening, sharing, and connecting with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart – Philippine Province, joined by the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

Together, we explored how finding the courage to express what is alive in us and developing the willingness to truly hear othersβ€” can open a path toward deeper understanding, compassion, and authentic connection.

NVC is not about finding the right words to make someone do what we want. 🌱

Manipulation is about trying to control an outcome. In NVC, the intention is different: to create connection while considering everyone’s needsβ€” including our own.

We can express what we need and make a clear request:

Would you be willing to…?

But a genuine request also means being open to hearing β€œno.” A β€œno” isn’t the end of the conversation. It can be an opportunity to understand what need is behind the other person’s response and explore another strategy together.

NVC isn’t about getting our way. It’s about creating connection where everyone’s needs matter.

Last August 13, we had the opportunity to be part of the implementation of PROJECT BRIDGEβ€” Building Respect, Inclusion, Dialogue, Growth, and Empathy, an Integrated Division-Wide Social Emotional Learning and Values Formation Initiative of the DepEd Division of Lanao del Norte.

Through Nonviolent Communication (NVC), we explored empathy, respectful dialogue, connection, and ways of communicating that allow us to see not only what is being said, but also the feelings and needs behind our words and actions.

Grateful to the DepEd Division of Lanao del Norte for creating spaces where social-emotional learning, empathy, and meaningful dialogue can continue to grow.

Every opportunity to share NVC is also an opportunity to plant seeds of connectionβ€” one conversation, one classroom, and one community at a time. 🌿

When you’re first learning NVC, it can feel slow. 🌱

You pause to notice what happened, identify what you’re feeling, connect with what you need, and think about what you’d like to request.

I observe…
I feel…
because I need…
Would you be willing to…?

But like any new practice, it becomes more natural with time. The goal isn’t to recite a formula in every conversationβ€”it’s to develop an awareness that eventually becomes part of how we listen, speak, and connect.

NVC may feel slow while you’re learning it, but connection is worth the practice.

There’s more to NVC than simply starting a sentence with β€œI observe.” 🌱

You can say β€œI observe, I feel...” and still blame, judge, or criticize someone. NVC isn’t a script or a set of magic wordsβ€” it’s about bringing awareness to what we’re observing, what we’re genuinely feeling, the needs underneath those feelings, and what we might request.

The words matter. However, the intention behind them matters even more.

NVC isn’t just a way of speaking. It’s a way of connecting.

NVC isn’t just for conversations at home. 🌱

The same principles of empathy, honest expression, and understanding needs can be practiced in schools, workplaces, organizations, communities, and even during difficult conflicts.

Because wherever there are people, there are different feelings, needs, perspectives, and ways of seeing the world.

NVC isn’t only about improving family relationships. It’s about how we relate to one anotherβ€” wherever we are.

Understanding someone doesn’t mean agreeing with them. 🌱

In NVC, we can listen to another person’s feelings and needs, understand where they’re coming from, and still have a completely different perspective.

Empathy doesn’t require agreement. It simply asks us to recognize the humanity and needs behind what someone is expressing.

We can disagreeβ€” and still stay connected.
