A two-day Training on 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 was successfully conducted on March 9–10, 2026 at Poblacion in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Tanudan. The activity aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of coffee farmers in Tanudan in improving the quality of their locally produced coffee.
The training was organized in preparation for the 2nd Coffee Quality Competition, one of the highlights of the upcoming Kape Festival scheduled in June 2026.
On the first day of the training, 𝐌𝐫. 𝐉𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐧, Coffee Focal Person of DTI- Kalinga discussed the mechanics of the Coffee Quality Competition, and provided guidance on proper coffee bean sorting and grading. The session emphasized the importance of proper bean selection and quality control to ensure competitive and high-quality coffee entries.
On the second day, 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐫. 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐢 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐬, 2025 National Gawad Saka Awardee and Administrator of KapeAralan Training Institute, Inc. delivered a lecture on the coffee post-harvest process and discussed essential coffee roasting techniques. She also demonstrated proper roasting using a mini roaster, explaining that the same principles can be applied to manual roasting methods commonly practiced by farmers.
At the later part of the training, a coffee tasting activity was conducted where farmers sampled coffee with different levels of roasting. Participants were encouraged to share their observations and comments, helping them better understand how roasting levels influence the flavor, aroma, and overall quality of coffee.
The training equipped farmers with practical knowledge and hands-on experience, preparing them for participation in the upcoming Coffee Quality Competition during the Kape Festival.

The National Kalasag Team from the Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau (FTEB) conducted a two day monitoring and enforcement operation in Tabuk City and Rizal, Kalinga on February 9–10, 2026. The activity was led by Ms.Mina V. Forteza, Supervising Trade Industry Development Specialist of FTEB Product Standards and Monitoring Division, together with six enforcement teams and one price and supply monitoring team deployed across the province.

The enforcement teams inspected construction materials retailers, appliance and electrical stores, service repair shops, and other establishments covered by mandatory product certification requirements. The operation aimed to ensure compliance with product standards, proper labeling, and the availability of certified and safe products for consumers.

Meanwhile, the price and supply monitoring team focused on Basic Necessities and Prime Commodities (BNPCs), observing that Young’s Town Canned Sardines and Doreen Condensada continue to saturate the retail market in the monitored areas. Across the two day activity, the teams covered 171 firms, including 151 construction related establishments and 20 grocery retailers. A total of six Notices of Violation (NOVs) were issued for noncompliance with trade and product standards. With 96% overall compliance, Kalinga continues to maintain a high level of adherence to consumer protection and product quality regulations. These enforcement efforts reinforce DTI’s commitment to safeguarding consumers while guiding retailers toward lawful, responsible, and quality driven business practices.
