A Vision finally Taking Root.🌱

On September 4, 2026, the Green Samar Project marked a historic milestone through its Groundbreaking Ceremony and Ceremonial Tree Planting at the Samar Island Natural Park Headquarters in Sitio Campo Uno, Paranas, Samar.

The project aims to restore 120,000 hectares of degraded rainforest within the Samar Island Natural Park through the planting of native tree species, assisted natural regeneration, and enrichment planting. It also seeks to reconnect degraded and fragmented forest areas, strengthen the Park’s protection and surveillance capacity, conserve its rich biodiversity, and support communities living within SINP through employment, improved livelihoods, social infrastructure, and long-term benefit-sharing opportunities.

The event was graced by Hon. Sharee Ann T. Tan, Governor of Samar; Hon. Christopher Sheen Prejomo Gonzales, Representative of the Lone District of Eastern Samar; Regional Executive Director Arturo N. Salazar of DENR Eastern Visayas; Mr. Ruben Diego O. Picardo, President and Chief Executive Officer of Green Samar BioSPV Corporation; Mr. Fabio Ferrari, Chief Executive Officer of aDryada; Ms. Fabiola Flex, Head of Public Affairs of aDryada; Hon. Eunice U. Babalcon, Vice Mayor of the Municipality of Paranas; representatives of partner agencies and local government units; and the local community beneficiaries, whose active participation is vital to the success and sustainability of the project.

More than a tree-planting initiative, the Green Samar Project represents a long-term commitment to heal damaged ecosystems, protect the remaining forests of SINP, and empower communities to become active partners and beneficiaries of conservation.

Today’s groundbreaking signifies that what began as a vision more than three years ago is now becoming a reality—one tree, one community, and one collective action at a time.

3𝒓𝒅 𝑸𝒖𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑺𝑰𝑵𝑷-𝑷𝑨𝑴𝑩 𝑴𝒆𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 | 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒈𝒖𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒐, 𝑺𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒓

The 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐫 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 (𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐏-𝐏𝐀𝐌𝐁) successfully convened its 3rd Quarter Meeting in the Municipality of Matuguinao, Samar, bringing together PAMB members, partner agencies, local government representatives, and stakeholders in support of the effective management and protection of Samar Island Natural Park.

The meeting served as an important venue for the discussion and deliberation of various matters concerning protected area management, biodiversity conservation, research activities, development initiatives, resource use, and other concerns within SINP. Through collective decision-making and continued collaboration among its members and partners, the PAMB continues to uphold its mandate of balancing conservation priorities with responsible and sustainable development.

PAMO-SINP extends its appreciation to the Municipality of Matuguinao for hosting the meeting and to all PAMB members and stakeholders for their active participation and continued commitment to the protection and sustainable management of Samar Island Natural Park.

Together, we continue to safeguard Samar’s natural heritage for present and future generations. 🌱💚

The Samar Island Natural Park–Protected Area Management Office extends its heartfelt appreciation to the Municipality of Matuguinao, under the leadership of Mayor Aran dela Cruz Boller, for the warm hospitality and gracious accommodation during the 3rd Quarter SINP-PAMB Meeting. Beyond the productive discussions, Matuguinao once again showed us how truly beautiful and rich it is in natural treasures—from its lush landscapes to the remarkable Sulpan Maleho Cave and Cold Spring. We are grateful to the LGU and the people of Matuguinao for being our valued partners in protecting and sustainably managing the natural resources of Samar Island Natural Park. Truly, Matuguinao is a place worth protecting, exploring, and being proud of.

𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐀𝐌𝐀𝐑 𝐑𝐀𝐅𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐀 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒 🌿

The Protected Area Management Office–Samar Island Natural Park (PAMO-SINP), in collaboration with the Local Government Unit of Basey, conducted a Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Campaign for the residents of Barangay Guirang, Basey, Samar, highlighting the conservation importance of the Samar Rafflesia (Rafflesia manillana), classified as Endangered under DENR Administrative Order No. 2026-20.

The activity was conducted in response to observed threat indicators within and near the species’ habitat, including signs associated with possible illegal timber poaching and other human disturbances that may lead to habitat degradation. Since the Samar Rafflesia depends on a specific forest habitat and host vine for survival, disturbance or destruction of the surrounding vegetation may directly threaten the species.

During the CEPA, residents were oriented on the ecological significance and conservation status of the Samar Rafflesia, the importance of protecting its habitat, and the vital role of the community in reporting and preventing activities that may threaten the area.

The discussion also highlighted the provisions of Republic Act No. 11038, or the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System (ENIPAS) Act of 2018, particularly the prohibited acts within protected areas, including unauthorized cutting, collecting, destroying, or removing forest products and wildlife, as well as activities that may damage or alter protected habitats.

Through the strengthened partnership between PAMO-SINP, LGU Basey, and the local community, the CEPA campaign aims to foster greater environmental awareness and encourage residents of Barangay Guirang to become active partners in safeguarding the Samar Rafflesia and the forests that sustain this unique species.
