In a remarkable sighting, divers from Whispering Palms/Sipaway Divers, led by Lasse Gerres and Ronja Trübger, documented thresher sharks (genus Alopias) off Sipaway Island Marine Protected Area in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental on October 25, 2025. The encounter, captured during a marine assessment supported by Pacific Environment and the local Coastal Resources Management Division, provides rare evidence of these elusive sharks thriving in Philippine waters. Thresher sharks are globally rare, highly sensitive to habitat disturbance, and protected under Philippine law (Republic Acts 9147 and 8550), making this sighting an important confirmation of the species’ continued presence and the effectiveness of local conservation measures.

The presence of thresher sharks within the MPA underscores the critical role of protected areas in preserving endangered species and maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. These apex predators help regulate fish populations, support coral reef health, and contribute to sustainable coastal livelihoods through ecotourism opportunities. This discovery serves as both a scientific milestone and a reminder of the importance of enforcing marine protection policies, promoting community stewardship, and expanding conservation efforts to safeguard the Philippines’ rich marine biodiversity for future generations.

The Dalaw-Turo Program at Don Carlos Ledesma National High School in Brgy. Buluangan, San Carlos City was truly impactful!

The educational activity, spearheaded by the DENR TSPS Northeast Negros Site Management Unit, was participated in by representatives from the Coastal Resource Management Division - SCC, Neg. Occ. and Meperg Southern Visayas who shared their expertise on marine conservation and coastal protection.

Through interactive discussions, students gained valuable insights into the importance of safeguarding our oceans and waterways, as well as ways to contribute to these efforts. The program reinforced the importance of collaboration and community involvement in protecting our marine resources, inspiring students to take action and make a positive impact in their communities.

The Tañon Strait Protected Seascape - Northeast Negros Site Management Unit, in collaboration with Philippine Coastguards, conducted a successful Information, Education, and Communication Campaign (IEC) on Coral Bleaching Awareness today, November 14, 2025 in Barangay Mahilum, Municipality of Calatrava. This initiative aims to educate the community on the importance of coral conservation and the impacts of bleaching on marine ecosystems.

•What is Coral Bleaching?
Coral bleaching happens when corals lose their vibrant colors and turn white due to stress, mainly from rising ocean temperatures. Corals have tiny algae called zooxanthelle living inside them, which provide food and color. When the water becomes too warm, these algae are expelled, causing the coral to bleach.

•Causes and Effects
The primary cause of coral bleaching is climate change, which increases sea temperatures. Other factors such as pollution, overfishing, and sedimentation also add stress to coral reefs. When bleaching occurs, the entire marine ecosystem suffers.

•How Can We Help?
Everyone can take part in protecting coral reefs. Simple actions such as reducing plastic use, avoiding littering, and conserving water can make a big difference. Support marine protected areas and choose reef-safe sunscreens when swimming or diving.

We would like to extend our gratitude to Sagasa Small Fisherfolks Association (SASIFA), for their active participation and support in this activity. Your involvement is crucial in promoting coral conservation and sustainable marine practices.
