BRINGING HOPE TO THE MANOBO LEARNERS OF BIAO

Deep in the remote barangays of Palimbang, where rough roads wind through hills and vast farmlands, stands Biao Elementary School โ the only center of learning nestled within the heart of the Manobo tribe community. For generations, the Manobo people here have lived simple lives rooted in their rich culture and traditions. Their children walk for hours along dirt paths, crossing streams and grassy trails, just to attend classes, often carrying their lessons wrapped in cloth or plastic bags, with very little school materials to use.
But today, the quiet village came alive with cheers and warm smiles, as personnel from the Sultan Kudarat Division of the Department of Education joined hands with officials and staff of the Local Government Unit of Palimbang headed by Mayor Myrna Casas Kapina and Vice Mayor Joenime Kapina for a special community service mission, dedicated especially to the Manobo learners and families of Biao.
The team traveled for hours under the warm sun, braving difficult terrain, bringing with them loads of gifts: brand new school bags filled with notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, and other learning supplies; educational books and storybooks; stacks of clean, gently used clothes; and dozens of pairs of slippers in all sizes โ things that are hard to come by in this far-flung area.
Upon arrival, they were welcomed by the school head, teachers, tribal elders, parents, and the young learners, all proud members of the Manobo tribe. The children, dressed in their simple traditional and daily clothing, lined up excitedly, their dark eyes shining with joy and gratitude as they watched the volunteers unload the items.
One by one, each Manobo learner received their own school bag packed with complete supplies. The books given will not only help them with their lessons but also open their minds to new knowledge, while the slippers and clothes will keep them comfortable as they walk long distances every day to go to school.
A young Manobo girl, clutching her new bag tightly against her chest, said in her soft native language translated by her teacher, โI used to carry my papers in a plastic bag. Now I have my own bag, and so many things to use. Thank you for remembering us here.โ Her words brought smiles and tears to everyoneโs hearts.
A tribal elder also expressed his thanks, saying, โWe are happy that you came all this way to help our children. Education is important to us, so they can have better lives while still keeping our Manobo culture and traditions alive. We feel valued and not forgotten.โ
Representatives from the Sultan Kudarat Division and LGU Palimbang shared that reaching out to indigenous communities like the Manobo tribe is one of their top priorities. โThese children have big dreams, just like any other child. We want to give them the tools they need to learn and grow, while respecting and honoring their beautiful culture,โ said one official. โNo learner should be left behind, no matter how far they live.โ
As the sun set over the hills of Biao, the volunteers left with full hearts, knowing they have brought more than just material gifts โ they brought hope, care, and the message that the Manobo community is seen, heard, and loved. For the people of Biao, this day will always be remembered as a beautiful bridge that connected them to help and support, lighting the way toward a brighter future for the young Manobo learners.
