Municipality of Santander

Santander is a 4th class municipality in the province of Cebu, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 16,105 people. Santander is the southernmost municipality of Cebu. It is the location of a sea ports that connect to Negros Oriental. Fast craft boats ferry passengers to Sibulan, Negros Oriental, with trips taking 20 minutes. Roll-on roll-off barges travel to Amlan, Negros Oriental, with trips taking 1 hour. It is known for its Tostado Festival. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF SANTANDER In the beginning, Santander was barrio of the town of Oslob. In 1918, Santander became a separate political unit after a successful representative in the Philippine Assembly by Representative Miguel Cuengco. Mr. Macario Culanag, a native of Santander was elected as "municipal president" of the town of Oslob. During his term, he worked for the creation of the Municipality of Santander. When Santander became a town, Macario Culanag ran for "President" and won. He served as such until he died. The following names were the persons who succeeded Macario Culanag as "President"; Pedro Vasaya, Maximo Bureros and Gil Miral. In 1930, the political title of "President" was changed to "Mayor" and the following were mayors of the Municipality; Celestino Bureros, Onesimo Buscato, Apolinar Luzano, Patricio Ypil, Francisco Vasaya, Jesus Filipinas, Crisologo Abines, W***y B. Wenceslao, Encarnacion A. Go. Priscilla O. Abines, James Arnold O. Abines, Mayor Wilson S. Wenceslao and Mayor Marilyn S. Wenceslao who is serving now.
