Sulu Provincial Government Strengthens Transition Engagement with the Region IX

15 August 2026 — Vice Governor Abdusakur M. Tan joined Governor Abdusakur A. Tan II during a lunch meeting with the Regional Directors of various agencies from the Region IX Field Office held today at the Governor's Conference Hall.

In fortifying a seamless integration into Region IX, the provincial government, through the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region IX, convened a unified, comprehensive, and informative service caravan for the people of Sulu, introducing various key programs and priorities of each agency. This significant act establishes a core foundation for effective public service and delivery as Sulu fully integrates into the regional administrative structure.

Provincial Government leaders, Governor Toto Tan II and Vice Governor Sakur Tan, underscored the crucial significance of this dialogue in strengthening partnerships between the provincial government unit and the regional government, and in identifying various ways forward toward a successful transition period. Joined by various key personalities, the venue facilitated open communication, integrated key visions, and strengthened collaborative efforts toward a common goal.

On the other hand, the Serbisyo-Caravan served as an avenue for bringing opportunities and services closer to the communities. From the mere planning to the actual implementation, the activities, which targeted various local sectors, were deemed a success. More than just the services, it was the commitment to peace, growth, resilience, and unity that brought all the regional directors together in fortifying Sulu's greater access to services and opportunities.

Vice Governor Tan Meets with DPWH-IX Regional Director Engr. Basir Ibrahim

15 August 2026 — During a courtesy visit to his office this morning, Vice Governor Abdusakur M. Tan discussed inclusive road development plans and projects with Regional Director Engr. Basir Ibrahim of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) – Region IX Field Office.

With the ongoing infrastructure development in Sulu, Vice Governor Tan underscored the importance of extending road development and continuing projects in different areas to bring services closer to the people. This dialogue provided an opportunity for Sulu to raise key concerns and strengthen support from the DPWH Regional Office.

Moreover, accompanied by Engr. Ajan Ajijul of the Sulu 1st District and key personnel, the dialogue promoted a more community-centered discussion and provided greater opportunities for local communities. With the ongoing transition, this engagement is integral to building a harmonious relationship among stakeholders.

Sulu Shares Regional Transition Plans and Expectations in PIA Interview with Provincial Vice Governor Tan

Vice Governor Abdusakur M. Tan underscored key plans and expectations regarding the ongoing transition and administrative integration of the Provincial Government of Sulu into Region IX. Key insights were shared during a face-to-face interview with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region IX, hosted by Ms. Myra Espinosa, held at his office on August 14, 2026.

Following the official detachment of Sulu from the BARMM, as granted through a resolution issued by the Supreme Court of the Philippines, the national government and the Provincial Government of Sulu have been working together to ensure that public services remain undisrupted throughout this period of transition. Through inclusive meetings and open communication, various regional offices are undergoing their initial integration by establishing satellite offices and adopting the full regional administrative structure in Sulu.

Given the setbacks and developments that the province has experienced over the past decades, Vice Governor Tan highlighted this crucial opportunity to raise the voice of his people. As a representative of Sulu in the TWG for the transition, he emphasized the importance of advocating for the greater good of the community. He also stressed that services will be much more efficient in terms of delivery, considering Sulu’s proximity to the Zamboanga Peninsula.

Additionally, Vice Governor Tan highlighted the commitment of the Sulu Provincial Government to ensuring that crucial services are given the utmost priority, particularly access to healthcare, education, and livelihood opportunities, in order to create a better future for the province.

As part of the PIA segment Kapehan sa Rehiyon Nueve, the interview provided an avenue for Sulu to share key insights and strengthen collaboration with the regional government in fostering progressive development for local communities. CHED Chairperson Shirley C. Agrupis Recognizes as an Adopted Daughter of the Province of Sulu

Through Resolution No. 45-2026, the Provincial Government of Sulu declared Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairperson Shirley C. Agrupis as the First Adopted Daughter of the Province of Sulu. This recognized her valuable contributions to strengthening quality education and institutional standards, her efforts in fast-tracking the conversion of the Sulu State College into a full university, and her leadership in advancing Halal-centered and globally competitive higher education.

During a special session chaired by Vice Governor Abdusakur M. Tan held at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan ng Sulu, the honorary conferment of the title was officially read by Governor Abdusakur A. Tan II, followed by the turnover of a copy of the resolution to Hon. Shirley Agrupis, CHED Chairperson. This significant act symbolizes the devotion, love, and compassion of the Sulu Provincial Government in honoring her leadership in advancing educational opportunities and institutional development, not just in Sulu but for the whole nation.

Meanwhile, Hon. Agrupis expressed her gratitude for the warm recognition and hospitality, highlighting in her message the journey behind the conversion of the Sulu State College into a state university as a shared effort and commitment of both the institution and the provincial government in pursuit of educational advancement. She also underscored that being the adopted daughter of Sulu comes with significant responsibilities and that honoring this title is crucial to bringing about change and opportunities.

JOLO, SULU | Vice Governor Abdusakur M. Tan served as guest speaker during the Annual Assembly convened by the Sulu Ulama Council for Peace and Development (SUCPD) at the Sulu State University Gymnasium, Walled City, Jolo, Sulu, on August 13, 2026.

The gathering served as an opportunity to deepen connections through faith and dialogue while honoring compassion, discipline, and Islamic doctrines. Apart from the assembly, the SUCPD also gave due recognition to distinguished scholars who successfully completed their non-secular education at both international and local schools, commemorating their efforts in pursuing greater knowledge and success in this endeavor.

Moreover, Vice Governor Tan expressly commended the Islamic scholars’ dedication to promoting a gateway to preserving Islamic teachings and faith. He also urged attendees to proactively share their joint commitment with the Provincial Government in continuously working toward the province’s sustainable future. Moreover, the official welcoming of the new members of the SUCPD was also a highlight of the gathering, emphasizing their commitment to growth, unity, peace, and inclusivity.

Tan met with Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Regional Director Pablio Benitez, Jr. of the Region IX Field Office, accompanied by MILG Sulu Provincial Field Office Director Emini T. Kadiri and staff, during a courtesy visit to the Office of the Vice Governor this afternoon.

Centered on public governance and future engagements between the Provincial Government and the regional government, the discussion focused on public service and the continued delivery of services as Sulu undergoes full attachment to Region IX. DILG-IX will also be joining the Serbisyo-Caravan program to be held in Sulu on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

Both parties underscored the need to sustain open communication and collaborative efforts in advancing good governance, strengthening institutional support, and ensuring that government programs and services reach the communities, particularly those in need.

13 August 2026 — Vice Governor Abdusakur M. Tan received Provincial Fishery Officer of the Sulu Provincial Field Office, Ms. Corazon S. Jumdail, and other staff from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources — Region IX during a courtesy call this morning.

The visit centered on the upcoming activities for the Serbisyo-Caravan, underscoring programs to uplift the lives of fisherfolk by providing them with efficient resources in support of their livelihood activities. Moreover, a 62-foot fiberglass fishing boat and 40 marine engines are expected to be turned over to the respective local communities.

Through the continued efforts and partnership of both the regional and provincial governments, local services and opportunities continue to be delivered with utmost excellence despite the province’s ongoing transition. Public welfare remains the top priority, ensuring that grassroots communities are not left behind in the pursuit of progress and development in Sulu.
