DOST Central Luzon SARAI CeNTRO Team and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) MIMAROPA recently conducted an orientation meeting to discuss the DOST-SINAG Program and its Virtual Hub, highlighting its role in advancing climate-resilient and data-driven agriculture in the country.

Held via Zoom on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the meeting introduced representatives to the platform’s framework, core features, and potential applications in supporting agricultural decision-making through timely climate and weather-related information. The discussion underscored the importance of science-based digital tools in helping farming communities adapt to changing climate conditions.

Key conversations centered on the use of the SINAG platform for major commodities. The Central Luzon Team noted that access to localized weather forecasts, advisories, and agricultural data can help farmers improve farm management practices, minimize production risks, and enhance productivity.

The orientation also opened discussions on possible areas of collaboration between participating regions, including data sharing, system integration, and capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening regional agricultural support systems.

Through continued partnerships and knowledge exchange, the DOST-SINAG Program seeks to promote climate-smart agriculture and reinforce the use of technology and innovation in building more resilient farming communities.

Sa pamamagitan ng pakikipagtulungan sa mga LGUs, SUCs, ahensya, at mga komunidad, patuloy nating pinalalakas ang paggamit ng agham at teknolohiya tungo sa mas matalino, handa, at makabagong agrikultura para sa MIMAROPA.

As part of the ongoing implementation of Project SARAI, the DOST-SARAI MIMAROPA team, together with representatives from the SARAI Central Hub, conducted mapping activities in selected agricultural areas in Buenavista, Marinduque, on April 29, 2026. The activity covered the barangays of Yook, Tungib Lipata, Sihi, Timbo, Malbog, Poblacion, Daykitin, Bagtingon, and Caigangan, aiming to verify crop types, confirm planted areas, and assess actual field conditions.

Through field validation and mapping, key data on crop areas, cropping patterns, and current agricultural conditions were gathered. These inputs will serve as the foundation for creating more localized and climate-informed advisories for farmers.

During the visit, the team also paid a courtesy call to the Municipal Agricultural Office of Buenavista to discuss opportunities for strengthening the implementation of Project SARAI and sustaining smart farming initiatives at the local level.

These activities are part of the broader rollout of the SARAI Centralized National Hub for Regional Operations (SARAI CeNTRO)—a DOST-funded initiative monitored by DOST-PCAARRD and implemented nationwide through UPLB in partnership with DOST Regional Offices.

Through Project SARAI, these coordination and site validation efforts further support DOST-MIMAROPA’s commitment to making science-based data and planning tools more accessible to local governments, helping address weather-related risks and agricultural planning needs.

The DOST–SARAI MIMAROPA team, in collaboration with the UPLB SARAI Central Hub, facilitated a Participatory Mapping and Seasonal Cropping Calendar Workshop in Buenavista, Marinduque, on April 28, 2026. The event brought together 52 participants from 12 barangays, including barangay officials, agricultural technicians, and representatives from local farmers' associations, offering a collaborative platform for validating agricultural data and supporting local planning efforts.

During the participatory mapping session, participants reviewed and validated printed agricultural maps at the barangay level, identifying planted areas, crop types, and existing cropping patterns. This collaborative process allowed for the integration of local, firsthand knowledge with the preliminary geospatial data provided by the SARAI team, ultimately improving the accuracy and reliability of the agricultural information.

The Seasonal Cropping Calendar Workshop simultaneously encouraged discussions on planting and harvesting schedules for major crops across barangays. Participants exchanged valuable insights into crop cycles, farming practices, and climate factors—such as rainfall patterns, dry periods, and climate risks—that affect agricultural productivity in their areas.

This participatory approach not only enhances the quality of agricultural datasets but also promotes shared ownership among local government units (LGUs) and farming communities. The validated inputs from the workshop will be integrated into SARAI’s geospatial tools to improve crop monitoring and inform the creation of science-based agricultural advisories and planning support for the municipalities involved.

These activities are part of the ongoing implementation of the SARAI Centralized National Hub for Regional Operations (SARAI CeNTRO), a DOST-funded initiative monitored by DOST-PCAARRD and executed nationwide through UPLB in partnership with DOST Regional Offices.

DOST-MIMAROPA through PSTO-Occidental Mindoro and DOST–SARAI MIMAROPA team, in collaboration with the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) and the Local Government Unit of San Jose, facilitated the installation of an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) in Barangay La Curva, San Jose, Occidental Mindoro on April 20, 2026.

The Automatic Weather Station (AWS) is a ground-based meteorological monitoring system that automatically collects real-time and historical weather data, including rainfall, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, and atmospheric pressure. These data are essential for generating localized weather advisories, conducting crop suitability analysis, and supporting seasonal agricultural planning.

Through the availability of site-specific and validated weather data, the initiative strengthens evidence-based planning among LGUs, particularly in the areas of disaster preparedness, climate change adaptation, and efficient agricultural resource management. It also enhances the capacity of local stakeholders to make timely and informed decisions in response to changing weather and climate conditions.

This activity is part of DOST–MIMAROPA’s ongoing efforts to advance smart agriculture across the region by improving access to reliable climate and weather data. Under the Smart and Sustainable Communities Program (SSCP), DOST–MIMAROPA promotes the adoption of SARAI technologies to support data-driven and climate-informed agriculture. The DOST–SARAI MIMAROPA Team generated a crop monitoring outlook for Buenavista, Marinduque using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery processed through Google Earth Engine and QGIS under the CL-SEAMS platform. This activity aims to provide a satellite-based view of areas with active vegetation signals within mapped annual crop areas and support agricultural monitoring, planning, and ground validation.

The analysis used the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which helps indicate vegetation presence and relative greenness across agricultural parcels. As the mapped areas cover annual crops, the detected signals may represent different crop types and varying growth stages depending on actual planting conditions in Buenavista.

The agricultural reference data used in this assessment were based on the 2025 Land Cover Map of Region-4B produced by the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA), while the total standing crop areas were processed through CL-SEAMS under SARAI MIMAROPA. Results should be interpreted with due consideration, as NDVI may be affected by cloud cover, topography, and surrounding forest vegetation, especially in the more mountainous areas of Buenavista, which can make values appear similar across some locations or dates.

All figures and spatial outputs presented in this map are preliminary and remain subject to field validation and further verification.
