Many have asked where I get my inspiration and compassion as a public servant. For one, my parents raised me well, but not alone. Me and my siblings were raised by a village: our Tongrayan Tribe.

In Tabuk City, we have a place known for preserving century-old wooden houses. Known to be the oldest modern settlement in Kalinga, come visit and have a glimpse of our Kalinga history at the Naneng Heritage Village.

These houses were built using rare native hardwoods. Architecturally they say, these houses were designed to withstand strong typhoons and overflows of the mighty Chico River.

There's also a spring that is a source of potable drinking water.

The houses, church, structures are arranged in such a way to accommodate road accessibility and to preserve rice fields. It is in a way similar to our current Comprehensive Land Use Plan. We already have this wisdom as a people, long before modern governance.

There's much about Kalinga here at the Naneng Heritage Village. I hope more of our youth learns to appreciate our people's history.

Inside Naneng Heritage Village is the historic St. Joseph church, officially known as St. Joseph the Husband of Mary Catholic Mission. It's the oldest Catholic church in Tabuk City.

Accordording to historical accounts, the place where the Tuga Catholic Church is now located is where Spanish-era Christian missions held mass in Kalinga dating back to 1689. However, it was only in 1927 with the establishment of the St. Joseph church did Kalinga have a primary structure for the Catholic church. Making this church the first that was established in Tabuk City.

Here at Aki's Cafe Gallery is a showcase of works by more than 20 Kalinga artists. AMUNG: A Gathering of Kalinga Artists, is an art exhibit opened last June in partnership with DTI Kalinga to celebrate culture and creativity.
