FIRE FOR EFFECT | PH Navy Participates in the Naval Gunfire Accuracy Competition for RIMPAC 2026

The Philippine Navy, through BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG6), demonstrates its gunnery skills alongside 14 allied Navy warships during the Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS) Rodeo, a live-fire competition of the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026 held on July 14, 2026, off the coast of Hawaii.

As the fourth ship on the firing line, FFG6 tested the system performance and accuracy of its Oto Melara 76mm Super Rapid Multi-Feeding (SRMF) Main Gun. It accurately landed shells on a virtual, two-dimensional land target more than 3.5 Miles away during the practice run and record firing. Performance reports will be provided later by the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), and ships that have the smallest average distance from the target using five salvos shall be declared as winners. Top performers will be awarded with trophies during the RIMPAC Closing Ceremony on July 31, 2026

Aside from the competition, the exercise focused on standard procedures for targeting, range safety, and communications between a spotter and firing ship in accordance with a joint fire plan. NSFS is also a critical enabler for amphibious operations to suppress enemy coastal defenses, destroy enemy fortified positions, and protect amphibious landing forces.

The Philippine Navy continues to advance its tactical proficiency and operational readiness as it works toward maintaining a modern and capable naval force.

Naval Defense Command Ensures Alignment with Philippine Navy Safety Standards

SANGLEY POINT, CAVITE CITY - The Naval Defense Command (NDC) successfully completed its Annual Safety Management Audit (SMA), conducted by the Office of the Safety Administration, Philippine Navy, from 06 to 10 July 2026 at the Cavite City. The audit was led by CAPTAIN RYAN A. TUMANDA PN(GSC), Director of the Office of the Safety Administration, Philippine Navy, together with the Philippine Navy Safety Audit Team. The activity aimed to assess the Command's compliance with higher headquarters' guidance on the implementation of safety policies and procedures across its administrative and operational functions.

Following the comprehensive evaluation, the Naval Defense Command achieved an outstanding safety audit rating its highest rating to date. This marks a significant improvement over the previous year's assessment and reflects the Command's unwavering commitment to complying with all prescribed Philippine Navy safety policies, standards, and procedures.

This outstanding achievement reinforces the Naval Defense Command's dedication to the Philippine Navy's core values of professionalism, operational excellence, and occupational safety. By institutionalizing rigorous safety standards and continuously strengthening its safety culture, the Command ensures that every sailor and marine is equipped to perform their duties with confidence, discipline, and maximum operational effectiveness.

The July 12, 2016 Arbitral Award affirmed that the Philippines can defend its maritime rights peacefully, through United Nation Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), evidence, and principled action. SANGLEY POINT, CAVITE CITY — The Naval Defense Command (NDC) successfully held its Change of Command Ceremony last 26 June 2026 at NBC, Social Hall, Naval Base Heracleo Alano, Sangley Point, Cavite City marking a significant milestone of the Command’s leadership transition as it welcomes a new leader to steer towards its strategic direction

The Change of Command ceremony was presided over by VADM JOSE MA. AMBROSIO Q EZPELETA PN, Flag Officer In Command, Philippine Navy who served as the Presiding Officer.

The highlight of the ceremony was the formal turnover of leadership from the Outgoing Commander, RADM PETER JEMPSUN VENTULA DE GUZMAN PN, to the Incoming Commander, COMMO LUED LAWAN LINCUNA PN. Through the reading of official relief and designation orders, followed by the symbolic exchange of the command symbol, authority and accountability were officially transferred.

In his remarks, the FOIC, PN commended the outgoing Commander for his dedicated service and stewardship during his tenure, while expressing full confidence in the incoming Commander’s capability to sustain the NDC’s momentum. As COMMODORE LUED LAWAN LINCUNA PN officially assumes command, the Naval Defense stands ready to fulfil its mandates in safeguarding the nation's maritime domain.

CROSSING THE INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE | PH Navy contingent crosses International Date Line en route to RIMPAC 2026

The Philippine Navy contingent aboard BRP Miguel Malvar FFG6 - PF successfully crossed the International Date Line (IDL) on June 17, 2026 while underway to Hawaii for its participation in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise 2026.

The milestone marked a significant moment in the deployment as members of the Naval Task Group 84, who conducted the Pre-Initiation Rites for the Domain of the Golden Dragon Ceremony, a centuries-old maritime tradition for sailors crossing the 180-degree meridian or the IDL for the first time.

As the BRP Miguel Malvar traverses its way to Hawaii, this is also the first time that the guided missile frigate crossed the IDL since its commissioning last year.

The transit likewise highlights the Navy's increasing capacity for extended-range deployments and participation in multinational maritime activities while demonstrating the capability and readiness of its modern naval assets.

The Philippine Navy continues to sustain operational readiness and strengthen its ability to participate effectively in regional and international engagements.

COORDINATED LEAPFROG MANEUVER | PH, Korea, Singapore Navies conduct leapfrog maneuver during group sail

The Philippine Navy together with partner nations participating in the multinational group sail successfully executed a coordinated leapfrog maneuver on June 17, 2026 as part of their preparations for the upcoming Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise 2026.

Involved in the exercises were the Philippine Navy vessel BRP Miguel Malvar FFG6 - PF, Republic of Singapore Navy Frigate RSS Steadfast (RSS 70), and the Republic of Korea Navy Amphibious Landing Ship ROKS Cheon Ja B**g (LST-687).

During the maneuver, the participating ships executed a leapfrog formation, in which vessels alternated as maneuvering ship and guide of the formation while maintaining close safe distance at 50 yards. The activity tested the ships’ crew proficiency in precise ship handling, communication procedures, and seamanship skills.

The Philippine Navy continues to strengthen partnerships with like-minded nations and enhance its capabilities to safeguard the country’s maritime interests.

AIR DEFENSE EXERCISE | PH, partner navies conduct live fire air defense exercise ahead of RIMPAC 2026

Enhancing interoperability and strengthening collective readiness, the Philippine Navy together with partner nations joining in the multinational group sail successfully executed an air defense exercise on June 18, 2026 as part of their preparations for the upcoming Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise 2026.

Participating in the exercises were the Philippine Navy vessel BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG6), Republic of Singapore Navy Frigate RSS Steadfast (RSS 70), Italian Navy Multi-purpose Surface Combatant ITS Giovanni delle Bande Nere (P 434), and Japan Self-Defense Maritime Force Destroyer JS Kongo (DDG-173).

During the exercise, participating ships tested their respective air defense systems and fired at an unmanned aerial vehicle target launched from JS Kongo, acting as the simulated low flying hostile aircraft. Such training enables the participating navies to refine tactics, techniques, and procedures while enhancing integration among partner navies.

The Philippine Navy’s participation in RIMPAC 2026 demonstrates its growing capability to operate modern platforms and contribute meaningfully in multinational maritime operations.
