MGB-IX (ZamPen) is the regional office of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau in the Zamboanga Peninsula comprising the provinces of Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Sibugay, Isabela City (Basilan Province) and the Charter City of Zamboanga.

𝗠𝗚𝗕-𝗜𝗫 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗜𝗦𝗔𝗚 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗭𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲 📄

Regional Director Engr. Hernani G. Abdon issued a new Industrial Sand and Gravel (ISAG) Permit on August 18, 2026, granted to Mr. Roland B. Magsayo. The permit, denominated as IP No. 000077-2026-IX, covers an area of 6.0267 hectares located within the municipalities of La Libertad and Rizal, Zamboanga del Norte.

Also issued during the period were the first renewals of the ISAG Permits of Ms. Rachel Anne Wong Diosmano, denominated as IP No. 000050-2021-IX, and Ms. Rose Nanette Sumoda Bocayong, denominated as IP No. 000047-2021-IX, on July 29 and August 17, 2026, respectively.

The official signing was witnessed by Engr. Ventrick Ceazar A. Albano, Engineer IV and Chief of the Mining Tenement and Evaluation Section, together with technical personnel from the Mine Management Division.

𝟓𝟎 years ago, the deadliest earthquake happened!

I 11 minutes past midnight of August 17, 1976, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake occurred in the island of Mindanao generating a tsunami about 9 meters high. It devastated more than 700 kms of coastline bordering Moro Gulf in the North Celebes Sea.

According to reports, there is an estimate of 8,000 casualties making it one of the most devastating earthquakes in the history of the Philippines.

The 1976 Moro Gulf earthquake and tsunami taught us to further recognize the natural signs of an impending local tsunami.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. IX (MGB-IX) joined the DENR Region IX delegation in the Information Serbisyo Caravan held today, August 15, 2026 in Capitol Gym, Patikul, Sulu.

The caravan was spearheaded by the Communication and Advocacy Committee (ComAdCom) of the Regional Development Council IX, which gathered various regional government agencies in a whole-of-government initiative to introduce their respective mandates, programs, and services to the people of Sulu.

Representing MGB-IX were Engr. Karll Colleen Contreras, Economist II and Information Officer-designate, and Geol. Ollyn Rey Balignot, Senior Geologist, who provided technical assistance to clients and addressed concerns relating to mining, mineral resources, and geosciences, while distributing Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials to help stakeholders better understand the Bureau’s mandates, regulatory functions, programs, and services.

Governor Abdusakur “Toto” Tan II, Governor of Sulu, welcomed the participating regional government offices during the caravan, underscoring the province’s commitment to closer coordination and stronger engagement with the agencies of Region IX. The DENR delegation, led by Regional Executive Director Ma. Angelique Go, was supported by the PENRO Sulu team whose warm reception and support greatly contribute to the smooth delivery of DENR services and technical assistance throughout the activity.

Through the Serbisyo Caravan, One DENR now brings responsive, accessible, and people-centered public service closer to Sulu.

𝗠𝗚𝗕-𝗜𝗫 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗢𝗝𝗧 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝗦𝗨–𝗭𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮 𝗦𝗶𝗯𝘂𝗴𝗮𝘆 🌱

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office IX (MGB-IX) held the Completion Rites for six Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science students from Mindanao State University–Zamboanga Sibugay, marking the culmination of their 310-hour On-the-Job Training (OJT) Program on August 10, 2026.

Throughout the internship, the interns gained practical experience through office- and field-based assignments, allowing them to apply their classroom knowledge and gain firsthand insight into the Bureau's work in environmental management and mineral resource governance.

During the ceremony, Engr. Reo S. Torres, Supervising Science Research Specialist (SSRS) and OIC Chief of the Mine Safety, Environment and Social Development Division (MSESDD), delivered a message on behalf of Regional Director Engr. Hernani G. Abdon, congratulating the interns on completing the program and encouraging them to uphold professionalism, integrity, and environmental stewardship in their future careers. Engr. Leo A. Ver, SSRS, also commended the interns for their dedication and active participation throughout the internship.

The interns likewise shared their experiences, key learnings, and valuable insights gained during their training with the Bureau. The program concluded with the awarding of Certificates of Completion in recognition of their successful completion of the internship.

MGB-IX congratulates the interns and wishes them continued success as they pursue meaningful careers in the field of Environmental Science. 🌿

𝗠𝗚𝗕 𝗜𝗫 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗵𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗹𝘂’𝘀 “𝗟𝘂𝗽𝗮𝗵 𝗦ū𝗴” 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 🌏

Reinforcing regional efforts toward disaster preparedness, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region IX (MGB IX) served as a key contributor during the “Lupah Sūg” Resilience Summit 2026, held on August 6 at the Municipality of Talipao, Province of Sulu.

Organized by the Office of Civil Defense Region IX (OCD IX) in partnership with the Municipal Government of Talipao for National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM), the summit brought together local chief executives, disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) officers, security forces, and community stakeholders to strengthen disaster preparedness and response capabilities across Sulu Province.

Representing MGB IX, Supervising Geologist El-Jedidiah O. Villacampa delivered a technical session titled “Understanding Geological Hazards.” He discussed the agency’s National Geohazard Assessment and Mapping Program (NGAMP), providing participants with insights into the mechanisms, early warning indicators, and risk mitigation strategies for rain-induced landslides, flooding, and karst subsidence.

Through continued technical engagement and collaboration with partner agencies, MGB IX provides essential science-based insights to help LGUs across the region mitigate natural hazards, protect lives, and build safer, more resilient communities.

DENR IX Strengthens Push for Solutions to Ancestral Domain Concerns

Long-standing ancestral domain issues affecting Indigenous communities in Region IX came into focus as officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region IX met with Akbayan Party-list Representative Dadah Kiram Ismula at the House of Representatives to discuss concerns over overlapping land titles and development projects.

The meeting was led by DENR Region IX OIC Regional Executive Director Marie Angelique C. Go, together with Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region IX Regional Director Engr. Hernani Abdon and Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Region IX Regional Director Atty. Abbas I. Lao.

During the meeting, the officials discussed concerns over overlapping land titles and development projects affecting ancestral domains in Region IX, exchanging ideas on practical solutions that protect the rights of Indigenous Peoples and strengthen collaboration in addressing these long-standing issues.
