Pakis­tan on Wednesday requested Unesco to facilitate the inclusion of two key heritage sites, Rani Ghat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Port of Banbhore in Sindh, in the Unesco World Heritage List.

The request was made during a meeting between Unesco Representative in Pakistan Fuad Pashayev and Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi. The Unesco World Heritage Centre currently catalogues Pakistan’s Tentative List at 37 properties, including the archaeological site of Rani Ghat and the Port of Banbhore.

The meeting was told that a visit by the World Heritage Committee to Banbhore was expected from September 6 to 11.

𝗣𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗡’𝗦 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗚𝗘 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗦 𝗔 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗣 𝗖𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗢 𝗚𝗟𝗢𝗕𝗔𝗟 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗚𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
Pakistan’s rich and diverse cultural heritage has achieved another remarkable milestone as 12 new archaeological sites and historic monuments have been added to UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites.

This significant achievement reflects the continued efforts of the Department of Archaeology & Museums, under the National Heritage & Culture Division, Islamabad, towards the identification, documentation, preservation, conservation, and international recognition of Pakistan’s invaluable archaeological and cultural heritage.

The newly enlisted properties include:
Rewat Fort (Islamabad), Pharwala Fort (Rawalpindi/Islamabad), Mai Qamro Mosque (Islamabad), Tomb of Sultan Muqarrab Khan (Islamabad), Bazira-Barikot (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Archaeological Complex of Gor Khatri (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Sethi House (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Bhamala Buddhist Complex (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Kalasha Valley Cultural Landscape (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Kot Diji Fort (Sindh), Umerkot Fort (Sindh), and Naukot Fort (Sindh).

Their inclusion on the UNESCO Tentative List marks an important step towards strengthening their protection, preservation, documentation, and promotion at the international level, while also paving the way for their potential future nomination to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

On 23rd August 2026: Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, Mr. Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, inaugurated the historic Mai Qamro Mosque and the Tomb of Sultan Muqarab Khan at Bagh Jogian, Islamabad.
Both monuments are included in the Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Upon arrival, the Federal Minister was warmly welcomed by Syeda Tanzeela Sabahat Director General Doam (Joint Sectary) Mr. Aman-ullah Advisor to Director General Doam and dignities of the Pakistan Gakhar Federation and officials of the Department of Archaeology & Museums (DoAM).
During the visit, the Minister toured the historic complex and reviewed its architectural, archaeological, and cultural significance.
Dr. Abdul Ghafoor, Deputy Director, DoAM, briefed the Minister on the historical background of the monuments, their heritage value, and ongoing efforts for their preservation, protection, and promotion.
The inauguration marks a significant step toward the recognition and safeguarding of Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage, reflecting the Government’s commitment to preserving historic monuments and archaeological assets for present and future generations.

The On-Site Technical Training Program for Digital Documentation has commenced at the Department of Archaeology & Museums (DoAM), Islamabad, in collaboration with the Korean Heritage Agency, under the “Capacity Strengthening for the Management of National Cultural Assets in Pakistan Project (2026–2030).”

The training program is designed to strengthen technical capacity and professional expertise in the digital documentation, management, preservation, and conservation of Pakistan’s national cultural heritage assets. It provides participants with practical knowledge and modern digital documentation techniques, supporting the effective recording, protection, and sustainable management of the country’s archaeological and cultural heritage.

Participants from Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir are taking part in the training, gaining hands-on expertise in contemporary methods of heritage documentation and digital asset management. Their participation represents an important step towards developing a skilled and technically equipped heritage workforce across Pakistan.

The initiative reflects the growing Pakistan–Korea cooperation in cultural heritage preservation and highlights the importance of international knowledge exchange, technical collaboration, and capacity building in safeguarding Pakistan’s rich and diverse cultural heritage for future generations.

Ms. Syeda Tanzeela Sabahat, Director General, Department of Archaeology & Museums (DoAM), Islamabad, visited the Archaeological Site and Museum of Banbhore, heritage aite on Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage, accompanied by Mr. Amanullah, Director PNCA, and Mr. Muhammad Ayub Jamali, Director General, PNCA.

The visit provided an opportunity to explore the rich archaeological legacy of Banbhore and gain insight into the measures being undertaken for the conservation and protection of its historic remains. The delegation also acknowledged the significance of sustained institutional efforts in ensuring the long-term preservation of this remarkable heritage site.

Justice of the High Court of England and Wales, Mr. Martin Griffiths, visited the Islamabad Museum, accompanied by Mr. Aurangzeb Khan, Director, Supreme Court Museum. During the visit, Justice Griffiths was briefed by Dr. Abdul Ghafoor, Deputy Director, Department of Archaeology & Museums (DoAM), on the museum’s archaeological collections, cultural heritage, and historical significance.
Reflecting on his visit, Justice Martin Griffiths remarked:
“A breathtaking display of human ingenuity and man-made beauty, linking us to our most remote origins and teaching us both what we have in common with our ancestors and what they may yet teach us.”
