Faculty members and students of the Department of Basic Sciences visited the Earthquake Engineering Center (EEC), UET Peshawar, on the invitation of the Director EEC.

The visit turned out to be a very valuable learning experience. It provided students with the opportunity to observe the practical side of concepts they study in Physics and Mathematics, including wave motion, vibration mechanics, and seismic analysis. The laboratory sessions, especially the shake table demonstrations, were particularly engaging and helped in building a clearer understanding of these concepts.

Such activities really help students understand concepts better and connect their studies with real-life applications. Overall, it was both an informative and enjoyable experience for our students.

We are thankful to the Director of EEC for inviting us and for arranging such a wonderful and well-organized visit.

UET Peshawar successfully conducted the first Orientation Session for mentors of the inaugural cycle under the Mentoring Program for Universities (MPU), initiated by the National Academy of Higher Education (NAHE) HEC. The aim of this program is to promote an effective mentoring system among faculty students and administrative officers in universities. It enhances the capabilities of mentors and supports the professional and personal development of junior faculty, students and other administrative staff.

Addressing on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of self-awareness as the foundation of effective mentoring. He said, mentors must first understand themselves before guiding their mentees. He highlighted the need to recognize and address cognitive and behavioral patterns, encouraging mentors to support mentees in building a more constructive outlook that is generally lacked in our society. He appreciated UET Peshawar’s steady progress in implementing MPU and assured full institutional support for alignment with NAHE–HEC guidelines.

Earlier, Senior Dean Prof. Dr. Rizwan Mahmood Gul, the Chairperson Mentoring Program Committee (MPC) shared updates on MPU implementation at University. The technical session was conducted by Prof. Dr. Abdul Shakoor, a certified trainer on mentoring skills by NAHE HEC. Dr. Sahkoor discussed key mentoring techniques under the guidelines of HEC and engaged participants in an interactive discussion. Dr. Shamaila Farooq, focal person MPU briefed the participants on the implementation strategy and way forward for MPU at UET Peshawar. The session marked an important step toward institutionalizing a culture of mentoring, professional development and growth at the university.

We are pleased to share that Mr. Syed Muhammad Haider Shah, an outstanding graduate of UET Peshawar, recently presented his research work at the Department of Basic Sciences University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar.
Mr. Haider Shah completed his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Peshawar (2014-2018) and later pursued his Master’s degree at UET Peshawar (2018-2022) under the supervision of Dr. Noor Badshah. His MS research focused on AI-based classification of CT/MRI brain tumor images using Convolutional Neural Networks.
In 2024, he was awarded the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Scholarship under the ENGAGE Project, funded by the European Union, to pursue a PhD in Artificial Intelligence (Medical Sciences). His joint doctoral program involves collaboration among three distinguished institutions:
• The Cyprus Institute (Cyprus)
• European Synchrotron Radiation Facility ESRF (France)
• SESAME Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (Jordan)
His PhD research focuses on developing deep learning methodologies for 3D synchrotron X-ray tomography data, with the aim of reducing X-ray radiation exposure during imaging of human and bovine trabecular bone samples. High radiation doses can compromise mechanical properties and increase cancer risks, making this work critically important.
Mr. Haider Shah’s research team has successfully completed data acquisition at SESAME and is now progressing through the reconstruction phase using both analytical and iterative techniques. They are developing innovative AI-based models capable of producing high-quality images from low-dose radiation scans contributing to safer and more efficient medical imaging practices.
The Department of Basic Sciences congratulates Mr. Syed Muhammad Haider Shah on his remarkable achievements and wishes him continued success in his academic and research journey.
UET Peshawar is proud of him
