🇽🇰 Kosova’s Journey: From Ancient Origins, to the Medieval “Kanun”, and to Modern Statehood and Diplomacy

This week at Vistula University (Grupa Uczelni Vistula), Chief of Mission, Ambassador Drilon S. Gashi delivered an engaging lecture that traced the long and resilient history of Kosova. He then fielded an excellent array of questions from the global students of Vistula University, showcasing both their interest and prior knowledge of Kosova and the Southeast Europe region.

He began by exploring the ancient roots of the current country hailing from Ancient Dardania, then presented the legacy the Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini, which served as an early and essential legal code for Albanian people in Kosova and across the Balkans. The Ambassador moved through the complexities of life under Ottoman and Yugoslav rule, painting a picture of a nation that has long navigated shifting political tides while maintaining its distinct identity.

The narrative then shifted to the pivotal struggles of the 20th century. Ambassador Gashi detailed the transition from the mass nonviolent mobilization led by President Dr. Ibrahim Rugova to the eventual, heroic armed resistance of the Kosova Liberation Army in 1998-1999. He reflected on the gravity of the Yugoslav wars and the significance of NATO’s humanitarian intervention in Kosova, which ultimately led Kosova down the path towards peace, stability and independence.

A central theme of the talk was the power of international solidarity. The Ambassador expressed deep gratitude for Poland’s early support and its important contributions to Kosova’s peacekeeping. He concluded with an optimistic look towards the future, particularly regarding Kosova-Poland bilateral ties, emphasizing a shared commitment to democratic values and the strengthening of relations through exchanges in areas including economics and investment, culture, defense, and politics.

Following the lecture, Ambassador Gashi met with His Magnificence, Rector Dr. Wawrzyniec Konarski, to further discuss the lecture topic and future academic cooperation of Kosovar universities with Vistula University. The Rector and Ambassador agreed that the potential for cooperation is great. 🇽🇰🎓🇵🇱
