Surf in Rico was created in 1997 after the success of "La Bruja, Puerto Rico" surf documentaries. A collaboration with Aaron Chang led us to meet Renata Zincone, art director '‘extraordinaire’' from Sao Paolo, who gave me the opportunity to meet David Carson. David took the project to another level of style and design, which sparked a series of design awards in the NY Type Directos Club and Print
Magazine. A recurring subject in Surf in Rico was Ocean Safety and the lack of it on the Island. The Government does very little to educate locals and visitors about the dangerous conditions on any given day. The main stream media in Puerto Rico have meteorologists giving wrong information about SURFING conditions every time a swell approaches the Island. A recent push of the House of Representatives to pass a law banning SURFING in Puerto Rico has brought back the Surf in Rico project. Our core purpose will be the same, To promote Puerto Rico as a world class surf/beach destination and to prevent drownings by educating locals and visitors thru the development of an educational program that will help reduce the amount of drownings every year. Honestly, I could not keep my arms crossed doing nothing and expecting others to stand up and do what needs to be done. When you see actions like the one the House of Representatives is pushing, one needs to stand up and fight for what is right and for what will benefit the Island in this economic climate. This is an inclusive project were we would like to invite everyones ideas, suggestions, comments and activism to create an Ocean Safety program that will make our biggest asset, THE BEACH, a safe place for everyone.
