Jericho Municipality holds a community meeting regarding the registration of Jericho on the World Heritage List
The Municipality of Jericho held a community meeting at Syran Hotel hall regarding the registration of Jericho “Tel-Alsultan” on the World Heritage List. A number of citizens, representatives of local community institutions, and city council members presented the event. mayor, Mr. Abdul Karim Sedir, welcomed the attendees, appreciating the efforts to prepare for the event. He described it as great that Jericho by registering Jericho on the World Heritage List, pointing to the efforts of the previous city councils, local community, the Palestinian Ambassador to UNESCO, the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, local radio and channels, and the owners and influencer social pages, as they are partners with the municipality in achieving the largest achievement at the national level.
Mayor stressed that such meetings come within the municipality's conviction that the event is great and huge where it needs to involve everyone in it to leave footprint to every Palestinian citizen in this registration, which expresses the Palestinians' right to their land and refutes the untrue occupation story.
Sedir briefed the attendees on the practices made by Israel through the media campaign against the registration of Tel al-Sultan on the World Heritage List and on the visits made by ministers from the occupation government to the archaeological site of Talul Abu Al-Alaik (southwest of Jericho) and their call for settlers to invade Tel al-Sultan and the city of Jericho in parallel with the announcement of the registration, which will too place on 17/09/2023 in Riyadh.
The Director General of the Directorate of Tourism and Antiquities in Jericho, Mr. Iyad Hamdan, talked about the technical steps taken to register Tel Al Sultan on the World Heritage List. He mentioned that the registration of Jericho “Tel Al Sultan” on the Heritage List is considered the first Palestinian, not on an emergency basis, and that it came through a recommendation from the specialized advisory staff. ICOMOS, Mr. Iyad thanked the city council for the tremendous efforts adopted in partnership with everyone, stressing that the accumulated work is what brought us to this great stage of achievement.
Deputy Mayor of Jericho, Mr. Fathi Brahme, called on everyone to recruit all energies in order to come up with worthy celebrations of the magnitude of the great national event and to stay away from everything that disturbs the Palestinians’ joy in this achievement, which confirms the right of the Palestinian people in their land.
At the end of the meeting, discussion was opened for attendees, who emphasized on the importance of the event nationally and that it is related to the highest national interest. They expressed their readiness to participate in the celebrations that will be held in parallel with the announcement and to provide all necessary to success make the national celebration a, represented by the announcement of Jericho’s registration on the World Heritage List.
