An exquisite 'Aphyosemion' species, 'Aphyosemion herzogi' also represents a challenging taxonomic case that has been the subject of numerous studies aimed at clarifying the status of the members of the 'A. herzogi' superspecies. It is currently considered to comprise 'A. herzogi', 'A. bochtleri', and 'A. mitemelense'. Many populations identified as 'Aphyosemion aff. herzogi' during earlier expeditions should now be re-examined and may need to be reassigned to different species.

Entirely situated within the Guiana Shield—a Precambrian geological formation in northeastern South America and one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth—Guyana is home to a remarkable diversity of unique killifish species.

Expedition GUY GL 2012, carried out by José Ramón Gil and Jacques Laird, made a significant contribution to our knowledge of their distribution and ecology.

'Fundulopanchax avichang', one of the smallest species of the genus, was discovered by Ramón Castelo in 1985 and rediscovered during expedition GEML 00 by Francisco Malumbres and Paco Lora. It is known only from a very restricted distribution in the coastal lowlands of Equatorial Guinea.

Rivulus sladkowskii, a miniature Rivulus (s.l.) species, was described in 2023 by Frans Vermeulen and named in honour of Siegmund Sladkowski (1935–2023), a German aquarist and field collector who took part in numerous collecting expeditions across South America.

It inhabits very shallow, acidic waters deep into the Colombian Amazon forest.

Perhaps the most amazing video of killifish collecting you will ever see! Francisco Malumbres and Ruud Wildekamp collecting 'Nothobranchius rubroreticulatus' in Zakouma National Park under the watchful eyes of a resident lion pair. Expedition TD 05, Chad.

Expedition TD 05 found 'Nothobranchius rubroreticulatus' in Zakouma National Park, approximately 700 km east of its type locality, near Djamena. Another objective of the expedition was to find 'Pronothobranchius kiyawensis', but without success, as it was too late in the season and the biotopes had already dried up.

Ruud Wildekamp joined the team with the particular goal of collecting an 'Aphyosemion' species, something he had never done before. The team searched along the Chad–Central African Republic border in an attempt to establish the northern limit of the genus. As no 'Aphyosemion' species were found, the results suggest that the northern limit of the genus lies south of Chad.

Both 'Epiplatys' species were very abundant along the souteastern border of Chad.

One of the most iconic killifish species, Epiplatys annulatus. Endemic to Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and possibly Guinea-Bissau, it is occasionally available in the aquarium trade through commercial imports. Nevertheless, several collecting expeditions have been recorded, beginning in 1965, when Claus Stenholt Clausen collected eight individuals.

Unfortunately, coordinates are available for only a few collecting localities.

A collecting expedition across Mozambique, with a particular focus on the far north, homeland of the Makonde people.

Conducted by the renowned Nothobranchius explorer Holger Hengstler and Julia Lange, expedition MZHL 2005 introduced Nothobranchius sp. “Mocímboa da Praia” and Nothobranchius sp. “Bilibiza” to the killifish world, later described as Nothobranchius makondorum. The expedition also discovered Nothobranchius hengstleri.
