Happy 101st birthday to Kurt Marx, Holocaust survivor!

We wish a very happy 101st birthday to Kurt Marx, Holocaust survivor and friend of the USC Shoah Foundation.

Kurt was born on August 31, 1925, in Cologne, Germany. At 14, shortly after Kristallnacht, he was sent to England via the Kindertransport, which saved his life. After he turned 18, Kurt was conscripted into National Service, serving until the war’s end in 1945.

After the war, Kurt pursued a career in the diamond industry, married, and started a family. He remained dedicated to speaking about the Holocaust and prejudice in schools. In 2024, Kurt recorded an interactive biography with the USC Shoah Foundation and The Willesden Project, which is available on IWitness.

Happy Birthday, Kurt!

On 3 September 1944, Anne Frank and the other people from the Annex were transported by train from the Westerbork transit camp in the Netherlands to Auschwitz-Birkenau in occupied Poland. With 1,011 other Jews, they were packed tightly in closed goods carriages. Two and a half days later, they arrived in the night.

Anne Frank had been aware of the existence of Westerbork. She had learned about the war and the persecution of the Jews from the helpers and from radio.

On, 9 October 1942, Anne Frank wrote in her diary: ‘Our many Jewish friends and acquaintances are being taken away in droves. The Gestapo is treating them very roughly and transporting them in cattle cars to Westerbork, the big camp in Drenthe to which they're sending all the Jews.' She added: ‘If it's this bad in Holland, what must it be like in those faraway and uncivilized places where the Germans are sending them? We assume that most of them are being murdered. The English radio says they're being gassed. Perhaps that's the quickest way to die.’
