Southern Province/ Rwanda Its headquarters is at Busasamana in Nyanza District.

After the restructuring of administrative organs, former provinces of Butare and Gitarama lost some of their parts to make the Southern Province of the South out of them.

Amayaga Memorial Commemoration

At the Amayaga Genocide Memorial in Muyira Sector, Nyanza District, the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi was held, where the remains of 48 victims were laid to rest with dignity. The ceremony was attended by Hon. Beline Uwineza, Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies, alongside Governor Alice Kayitesi, Dr. Claude Byiringiro from IBUKA, Members of Parliament, security officials, and other guests. In her message, Hon. Uwineza stressed that remembering the Genocide, honoring the victims, and fighting genocide ideology are duties for all, and that protecting unity and resilience ensures genocide will never happen again.

National Umuganda – May 2026

On May 31, 2026, the National Umuganda was held in Gisagara District, Southern Province. The event was graced by Dr. Bernadette Arakwiye, Minister of Environment, Alice Kayitesi, Governor of Southern Province, Members of Parliament, leaders of security organs at provincial level, Assoc. Prof. Kayihura Muganga Didas, Vice Chancellor of the University of Rwanda, and Dr. Fatmata Lovetta Sesay, UNDP Rwanda Resident Representative.

During Umuganda, participants carried out anti‑erosion trench digging on Rwatano Hill, Mbogo Cell, Gikonko Sector. This activity marked the official launch of Rwanda’s Environment Week, the completion of Phase I of the “Green Amayaga” Project, and the kick‑off of Phase II.
