Patrin Pataroa is a local cocoa farmer in West Are’Are who attended one of our capacity building trainings at the southern region of Malaita Province last week.

Like many other women farmers in the rural communities, this is the first time for Patrin to attend any form of training that will help her to better manage her cocoa farm.

🗣️“We are very happy to have attended this training. Now our cocoa nurseries will be better than before,” she said.

Patrin is a member of the Siua Basin Development Association in Porepore Village, West Are'Are. They are one of the 45 Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) in Malaita Province who have signed grant agreements with SIART.

The training is focused on Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPDM) and Nursery Management and Types of Grafting techniques.

We remain committed to strengthening farming skills and the capacity of farmers in our Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) in the provinces.

On Wednesday 27 May 2026, our Team delivered a one-day training in Ro’one village in South Malaita.

A total of 31 participants from the Ueniusu’unu Cocoa Farmers Association, 21 male and 10 female, attended the training which focused on Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPDM) and Nursery Management and Types of Grafting techniques.

The same training will be conducted for the Louatowa and Haitataimwane Cocoa Farmers Association in Elite Village, South Malaita and the Siua Basin Development Association in Porepore Village, West Are'Are in the coming days.

This underscores the importance of ongoing support—both technical and financial - for ABPOs to effectively implement improved practices and represents another step forward in our mission to transform Solomon Islands agriculture through capacity building, market linkages, and sustainable practices, strengthening the cocoa sector for economic growth and community resilience.

Our team travelled to the southern region of Malaita Province last week to visit some of our Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) in East Are’are, West Are’are and Small Malaita.

There we conducted environmental and social monitoring, particularly for those involved in piggery farming and follow up on progress made by the ABPOs.

Sharing here some photos 📷 from the visit 🙏

Enjoy the 📸s 😉

With all our Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs), we ensure that they abide by an Environmental Code of Practice, or ECOP for short.

The ECOP serves as a practical guide to ensure smallholder farming and infrastructure activities minimize environmental and social risks.

Our Environmental Safeguards Officer, Mr. Steve Sae, who is currently on an environmental and social monitoring visit to ABPOs in Malaita Province, explains the importance of the ECOP for our local farmers and communities.

The Solomon Islands Agriculture and Rural Transformation (SIART) Project is ensuring that farmers from Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) implement an Environmental Code of Practice (ECOP), a requirement for World Bank funded agriculture projects.

These are ABPOs in Guadalcanal, Malaita and Makira-Ulawa Province who have grant agreements with SIART. SIART is implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) and supported by the World Bank.

The ECOP serves as a practical, step-by-step guide to ensure smallholder farming and infrastructure activities minimize environmental and social risks. It covers key agricultural practices and responsibilities.

SIART’s Environmental Safeguards Officer, Mr Steve Sae highlighted that the ECOP is a standardized set of environmental and social mitigation measures applied to manage minor, localized, or routine impacts during the planning, design, and construction of small-scale infrastructure project.

Our ‘Market Linkage Workshop’ is empowering local women farmers in Malaita Province.

Nelly Leafasia from the Afenakwai Women’s Cocoa Association, was among participants in our two-day workshop on Thursday and Friday this week in north Malaita.

She said the workshop was very helpful for both her and her association in understanding the market and identifying possible avenues to market their cocoa products.

🗣️“Understanding the market and engaging with authorities through this workshop has helped us better understand some of the challenges we face and the way forward in connecting our women farmers to buyers.

🗣️“The workshop has also broadened our understanding of the important role we play as rural farmers and as the backbone of the country’s economy.

🗣️“Having the Ministry of Agriculture’s delegation here gives us assurance that our concerns are being heard,” she said.

During the workshop, Agribusiness Producer Organization (ABPO) representatives highlighted challenges faced by their agribusinesses, discussed possible mitigation measures, and explored how their operations connect to wider domestic and international markets.

The ‘Market Linkage Workshop’ was an eye-opener for many of our farmers in the rural communities in Malaita Province.

Jason Au from the Home Pod Farmers Association in north Malaita said the two-day workshop was much needed in supporting their association’s future plans.

🗣️“We have always had the mindset that we are isolated, and somehow this has influenced our market strategies.

🗣️“The presentations from the key Government ministries have also helped clear some of our confusion and frustrations regarding issues affecting us rural farmers,” he said.

Our ‘Market Linkage Workshop’ for farmers in north Malaita successfully concluded today.

The two-day workshop brought together Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) involved in piggery, poultry, coconut, cocoa, and vegetable farming from across the region.

Strengthening market linkages is not only about business growth, but also about improving livelihoods, creating opportunities for farmers, and contributing to the broader development of rural communities.

Representatives from the Commodities Export Marketing Authority (CEMA), the Ministry of Commerce, Labour and Immigration, and the Ministry of Finance and Treasury also attended and made presentations during the workshop.
