Sending-off Ceremony of Fourth Cohort of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Teachers to China

The Ministry of Education organized a sending-off ceremony for the fourth Cohort of TVET Teachers travelling to China. The ceremony was held in the Minister’s Conference Room on Friday 13th September in the afternoon, in the presence of her Excellency Ambassador Ms Lin Nan; Director of the Confucius Institute, Ms Sunny Yang; the Principal Secretary for Education Sector Development Mr John Lesperance; Teachers; TVET Officials and other Invitees.

The new Cohort comprising six Teachers will depart for China from 17th September to 14th November 2024. These educators will receive specialized training in Graphic Design; Textile and Fashion and Ornamental Horticulture, at Institutions such as Zibo Vocational Institute, Weifang Engineering Vocational College and Shandong Vocational College of Light Industry.

In his remarks to the Teachers, the Principal Secretary for Education Sector Development Mr John Lesperance stated “The Government of Seychelles recognizes the vital importance of vocational education in shaping the future of our youth, particularly for those who aspire to pursue careers in technical and vocational fields. This initiative will undoubtedly bring long-term benefits to our students and the nation as a whole.

He further expressed: “Strengthening the capacity of our teachers is critical to ensuring the success and long-term sustainability of our education system. It is through their professional growth that we will continue to elevate the quality of education and enhance the learning experience for our students.”

On her side, the Ambassador remarked “In recent years, China has actively supported Seychellois vocational and technical education and training under the framework of the China-Africa Vocational Education Alliance. We have invited three groups of Seychellois Teachers to come to China for training, which achieved good results and improved the professional quality and skills of teachers a whole.”

She further stated: “Teachers are the heart of quality education and I believe every one of you will become the Ambassador of friendship between China and Seychelles”.

Compassion and Empathy Event for Learners Who Have Lost Loved Ones

In an effort to offer comfort, support and solidarity to learners who have experienced the loss of a loved one, the Ethics Education Fellows and Teachers, in collaboration with the Seychelles Ethical Education Solutions, held a special Compassion and Empathy Event on Friday 13th September at the National Theatre, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

This meaningful gathering was intended to create a space where learners can come together, express their emotions and find healing through creative and reflective activities. The programme included music, mindfulness, poetry and an interactive Tree of Hope activity, culminating in a message of hope for all participants.

Launching of the Tertiary Education Exhibition

The Ministry of Education launched its first Tertiary Education Exhibition under the theme "Making Informed Tertiary Education Choices for a Successful Future", on Friday 13th September 2024 at 10:00 am, at the Seychelles Institute for Teacher Education (SITE) Mont Fleuri. This comprised all the Professional Centres in Seychelles.

The aim of the exhibition was to showcase to the S5 Leavers and general public, all the different options in regard to programmes, courses and services available in the Tertiary Sector for 2025 and how to access these.

In attendance were: the First Lady Linda Ramkalawan; Honourable Speaker of the National Assembly Honourable Roger Mancienne; Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Honourable Gervais Henrie; Principal Secretaries; Governing Board Members; Executive Members of the Ministry; Directors of the various Professional Institutions; Parents; Teachers; Students and other Invitees.

The event was launched by the Principal Secretary for Education Services Ms Merna Eulentin. In her remarks Ms Eulentin stated to the students: “Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions in life. It is a decision that influences not just your professional success, but also your personal happiness, your impact on others and your sense of fulfillment. A career is more than a job title. It is about pursuing something that aligns with your values, strengths and passions.”

She further expressed: “Remember, this decision is personal. It is ok if your path looks different from those around you. This exhibition is about discovering what works for you, what drives you and how you can make a difference in the Seychelles or in the world through your career.”
The exhibition was open to the public until 3:00 pm.

The Ambassador- designate of the People's Republic of Algeria visit to the Ministry of Education

The Ambassador – designate of the People’s Republic of Algeria, H.E Mr Filali Ghouini, paid a courtesy visit on the Minister for Education Dr Justin Valentin, on Thursday 29th August.

At the start of the meeting, it was acknowledged that Seychelles and Algeria has a long standing history, but for quite a while, there has been a gap in cooperation between the two countries. The visit of the Ambassador at this time is therefore crucial, as this can reconnect Seychelles and Algeria by re-opening lines of communication; find ways for future cooperation…hence strengthen the relationship.

Discussion centered on the possibility of granting Scholarships to Seychellois Students. The Ambassador conveyed that Algeria can offer five fully funded scholarships to Seychellois Students each year. He informed that the courses on offer are vast for example Pharmaceutical; Technology; Mathematics; Artificial Intelligence and many more. Additionally, it was stated that the medium of instruction at the Universities is English, therefore, there should not be any language barrier for the students.

Minister Valentin further expressed his desire for the opportunity of Teacher Training in Algeria. He stated “Two things close to my heart and which I look forward to, is the introduction of the Teacher Institute of Education and the AI Institute.
The Minister further expressed his wish in linking the University of Seychelles with Algeria, especially focusing in the area of Environment; Climate change/Blue Economy.

The Courtesy Visit concluded with both parties agreeing for the enhancement of a great relationship and collaboration.

Launching of the First National Active Learning Adventures

The Ministry of Education along with the Special Needs Coordinators (SENCO), organized an “Active Learning Adventures” event in collaboration with Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort on Saturday 03rd August.
The activity which was held from 08:30 am to 3:30 pm included a selected group of Primary Schools Students Year Level P4 to P6 on Mahe, to showcase their abilities in different active learning activities.

The event comprised a series of outdoor games which aimed to stimulate the students’ young minds in creative thinking; problem solving and critical reflection.
The main objectives were to:
• Foster a sense of belonging and inclusion among learners with additional challenges
• Provide opportunities for social interaction and peer support
• Encourage collaboration and teamwork, promoting social skills development…to name a few.
The event was attended by the Minister for Education Dr Justin Valentin; other Officials of the Ministry; Head teachers and all SENCO Teachers.

In his remarks, following official launching of the event, Minister Valentin expressed that he “strongly believes in the holistic development of a child, be it in their academic capabilities, sportive, cultural and artistic development.”
He further stated that “it is paramount for a child to participate in recreational activities outside their class…for when they leave school, they have to apply what they learned in class in their everyday lives. Therefore, the connection between the two environments is essential”.
The Ministry of Education intends for this event to be a yearly activity on their calendar.

Signing Ceremony Seychelles Institute of Technology and Jinning Polytechnic China

The Ministry of Education conducted a signing ceremony on Wednesday 13th December.
The MoU was between the Seychelles Institute of Technology (SIT) and Jinning Polytechnic China.

This partnership is to engage staff from both parties on Programme Development up to Advanced Diploma, initiate a twinning training programme at Diploma Level starting with Automobile engineering, staff and learner exchange amongst others.

The Seychelles Institute of Technology and Jinning Polytechnic are most renowned Institutions that share a common vision of providing high quality technical and vocational education and training to our students and equipping them with the skills and competencies that are in demand in the global market.
The MoU is a testament to the mutual commitment and collaboration in advancing the TVET sector and fostering academic and cultural exchange between Seychelles and China.
