In recognition of International Women’s Day, Ambassador Priscilla Misihairabwi Mushonga participated in a panel discussion on “Women’s Health, Migration and HIV” in Stockholm.

A call to action for the African diaspora resonated at the "Migration, Health and HIV" seminar in Stockholm on March 21, 2026.

Ambassador Priscilla Misihairabwi Mushonga of Zimbabwe posed a pivotal question to the gathered community: “What can the diaspora do to facilitate the delivery of essential HIV drugs to Africa?”

The well-attended forum, organized by PositHiva Gruppe, Sweden’s largest patient organization for people living with HIV Grupp and Afrocommunity Magazine with the support of Gilead Nordics, brought together a unique cross-section of stakeholders. Three African Ambassadors joined leaders from numerous diaspora associations from over 30 countries and community members, creating a potent environment for discussion.

The critical need for African nations to bolster their own healthcare funding was the central message delivered by attending leading global health expert Professor Anna Mia Ekström of the Karolinska Institute.

Professor Ekström issued a stark warning that the withdrawal of PEPFAR funding is already leading to preventable deaths. Speaking as a keynote speaker at the "Migration, Health and HIV" seminar, Prof. Ekström called on African leaders to "step up" and increase domestic financing for HIV programs, stating it is "the only way to save the situation."

Drawing on her own history as a feminist leader, Ambassador Mushonga’s inquiry sparked a deep and attentive conversation. The event was marked by its high level of engagement, with participants contributing thoughtful questions, underscoring the community's commitment to addressing one of the continent's most pressing health challenges.
