Your child is going abroad. Does their health insurance go too?

University season is here, and this is the question many parents check last.

At first glance, a student often appears to have two policies: the university's student plan and the family policy back home. Look closer and the gaps appear. The student plan may work only in the study country. The family policy may have residency rules for dependants living overseas. Year-end holidays in Singapore can fall between the two.

The better question is not "does my child have insurance?" It is "will the insurance they have work everywhere they will actually be?"

Your job ends. Your health insurance usually ends with it.

With retrenchments back in the headlines, we are hearing the same question more often: what happens to my company medical cover when I leave?

Three things people learn late:

1. Cover usually ends when employment ends, not at the end of the month.
2. Dependants on the company plan usually lose cover on the same date.
3. A condition diagnosed while on the group plan may be treated as pre-existing when applying for individual cover afterwards.

The condition did not change. The insurance position did.

Whether leaving is planned or unexpected, the first step is the same: find out exactly when your cover ends.

"I have insurance from my company AND my own policy. Can I claim from both?"

Yes, and many people in Singapore do it wrong.

The rule: for plans that reimburse actual costs, the two together will not pay more than the bill. The exception: some plans, like hospital cash, pay a fixed amount on top. Most people don't know which of theirs is which.

The mistake: not telling insurer #2 what insurer #1 already paid. It may reduce or reject the claim. Non-disclosure outcomes vary by insurer and wording

The waste: paying two premiums that cover exactly the same thing.

Worth 15 minutes: put both policies side by side and check what each one actually pays.

Have you ever claimed from two policies? How did it go?

There is a type of health insurance most people in Singapore are shopping for without knowing its name.

It is called IPMI: International Private Medical Insurance. Not local insurance, not travel insurance. A plan that covers you across countries and moves with you when life changes.

If you are here on an Employment Pass, planning a move, or running a team spread across the region, this is probably the category you belong in.

We wrote a plain guide: what IPMI is, who needs it, what actually drives the price, and when a local plan is honestly the better buy.

Link in the comments. Ten minutes, no jargon.

Which one covers you today: a local plan, an international one, or you are not sure?

Learn what IPMI insurance is, how it differs from local health insurance in Singapore, what affects premiums, and whether it's the right choice for you.

A big health insurance renewal can be frustrating, especially when the increase is much higher than you expected.

The first reaction is often to look for a cheaper alternative. That’s sensible. But before you switch, make sure you’re comparing like for like.

Some lower-cost options are excellent. Others work very differently from traditional insurance, even if they look similar at first glance.

In our latest article, we explain the four questions you should ask before buying any health plan that seems too good to be true. They could save you from an expensive surprise when you need your cover the most.

Read the article and let us know: have you ever received a renewal increase that made you consider changing insurers?

You may not match an MNC on salary. You can often match them on care.

When salary is close, benefits and how looked-after people feel can decide it. Smaller companies sometimes assume strong benefits are out of reach. A well-designed scheme can give a small team meaningful health cover without the cost of a corporate giant. The trick is design, not size.

General information, not advice. Cover depends on insurer terms and underwriting.
