“I just did what I could.” — Six words from a community first responder that changed a family’s life forever.

You don’t have to be a frontline responder to be a hero to somebody else, and that is the idea behind SCDF’s Save-A-Life Initiative.

Through the initiative, SCDF equips everyday Singaporeans with lifesaving skills and access to AEDs and fire extinguishers. so that help can arrive earlier and more lives can be saved.

And with every person who steps up, we get closer to a Singapore where helping is the norm, not the exception.

[A Life Saved Together With A Community First Responder]

On 28 March 2026, at about 12:50pm, off-duty SCDF Emergency Medical Technician SGT3 Mohamed Arsaath s/o Mohamed Iqbal was visiting a relative's home in Jurong West when Mr Abdul Kaffur S/O Mohamed Hussain, a family friend, collapsed and exhibited abnormal breathing. Recognising the symptoms of suspected cardiac arrest, SGT3 Arsaath immediately began chest compressions.

Community First Responder Mr Lee Hing Kit was alerted to the incident via the myResponder app. He quickly retrieved a nearby Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and arrived at the scene to assist. Due to their actions, Mr Kaffur began showing signs of life, including regaining consciousness before the arrival of SCDF’s Emergency Medical Services and was subsequently conveyed to hospital.

Thanks to their timely lifesaving actions, Mr Kaffur is alive today.

On 28 May 2026, Mr Lee Hing Kit was presented with the SCDF Community Lifesaver Award by AC Quah Chee Onn Dennis, Commander, 4th SCDF Division.

[Six Individuals Saved Man from Drowning at SAFRA Jurong]

On 3 February 2026, at about 7:28pm, Mr Jonathan Chow, an on-duty lifeguard at SAFRA Jurong, dived into the pool to rescue a motionless man. Mr Chow brought the man to the poolside and commenced cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as he was not breathing.

Mr Chow was joined by Ms Ho Ting Fang and Mr Chan Zihang Wesley, both part-time lifeguards. Mr Whey Zhen Hui, who was swimming nearby, also stepped in to assist. Two other Community First Responders, Mr S M Sadman Rayan and Mr Rohit Tiwari also rendered assistance after being alerted to the incident through the SCDF myResponder app.

Together, the group conducted CPR on the man and used an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Two shocks from the AED were administered to the man. Upon SCDF’s arrival, the man was successfully resuscitated and conveyed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.

The swift actions and teamwork of the six individuals saved a life. On 25 April 2026, they were presented with the SCDF Community Lifesaver Award at the West Coast – Jurong West Cluster Community Resilience Day. The awards were presented by Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for Education, and Minister-in-Charge of Social Services Integration, and AC Quah Chee Onn Dennis, Commander, 4th SCDF Division.
