The engagement held on 22 January 2026 marks a concrete step forward for agricultural development in Western Area Rural and Urban. The Skill Up! – Unlocking Success in Green Skills Project clearly shows that targeted investment in youth-centered agriculture delivers results. Through this initiative, 52 young women and men aged 16–35 have gained practical, hands-on skills in organic vegetable cultivation, integrated fish farming, and poultry production. These skills are not theoretical; they are applied daily through structured and sustainable agribusiness activities, leading to increased production, improved market supply, higher incomes, and growing confidence among participating youth.

Implemented by MADAM NGO in collaboration with the District Agriculture Officer (Mrs. Fatmata Lamrana Bangura), Western Area District with support from BMZ and WHH, the project aligns national agricultural priorities with local development needs. The progress recorded reflects strong coordination among all stakeholders, particularly the support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. As Western Area Rural and Urban remains the country’s largest market hub, scaling such interventions is essential to meet rising food demand. Continued investment in youth agribusiness development, irrigation infrastructure, and market access will be critical to strengthening food security and achieving sustainable development outcomes.

The District Agriculture Officer-FATMATA LAMRANA BANGURA, in collaboration with staff and a group of farmers from the Western Area District, recently participated in World Food Day celebrations at Kailahun District. This event was marked as both monumental and historic, emphasizing the importance of food security initiatives in Sierra Leone.

Key stakeholders from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, led by Minister Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, expressed their full commitment to ensuring the success of the "Feed Salone" program.

This initiative aims to enhance agricultural productivity, promote local food production, and reduce reliance on food imports. The program is a strategic part of the government's broader vision for achieving food sovereignty and economic growth in the country.

During the event, Minister Kpaka highlighted that the acute shortage of food in Sierra Leone is exacerbated by global crises. He stated that "Feed Salone" is not merely a development program but a generational movement aimed at fostering self-reliance among Sierra Leoneans. The initiative seeks to create jobs, boost exports of cash crops, and ultimately improve the well-being of communities across the nation.

The collaborative efforts at World Food Day signify a unified approach among various stakeholders to tackle hunger and malnutrition effectively, ensuring that Sierra Leone moves towards a more sustainable and prosperous agricultural future.
