Partner Spotlight: Smart Farms Supporting Feed Salone

Mustapha Katta, Managing Director of Smart Farms, leads an entity that has partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to advance the Feed Salone transformation agenda.

Smart Farms specialises in seed multiplication, working closely with government to strengthen the national seed system. For the past three years, the entity has supplied quality seeds to farmers across Sierra Leone, significantly reducing the country's dependence on seed importation.

This partnership reflects the kind of private-sector collaboration central to achieving food security and self-sufficiency under Feed Salone.

✅ Seed multiplication in support of government
✅ Three years of consistent seed supply to farmers
✅ Reduced reliance on imported seeds

MAFS Participates in Delivery Clinic to advance Agriculture Priorities for the Next 12 Months

The Office of the Chief Minister convened Ministers, senior officials and implementing agencies at State House on 10th August 2026 for a Delivery Clinic aimed at fast-tracking priority deliverables across MDAs between September 2026 and August 2027.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) presented its consolidated 12-month delivery agenda, aligned with the Feed Salone agenda, showcasing:

✅ Major infrastructure investments
✅ Production initiatives
✅ National agricultural systems
✅ Institutional reforms

MAFS also called for stronger government support on financing, procurement, customs and logistics, contractor performance, and inter-agency coordination to remove bottlenecks to delivery.

With Finance, Planning and Economic Development, the Cabinet Secretariat, and the National Monitoring and Evaluation Agency all at the table, the clinic strengthened coordinated decision-making and accountability for agreed commitments.

MAFS remains committed to accelerating implementation and ensuring agricultural programmes deliver real, measurable benefits for farmers, women, young people and agribusinesses across Sierra Leone. 🌱

This morning at Youyi Building, MAFS leadership hosted and engaged the new Executive Team and Chairman of the National Council of Paramount Chiefs, with discussions focused on strengthening the role of Paramount Chiefs in the implementation of Feed Salone.

The Minister emphasized that chiefs are the natural link to communities and can help assess whether interventions will work effectively on the ground. The Council also expressed strong support for the Minister’s vision, while highlighting the need to close the gap between policy and implementation at community level.

The Minister, soon entering his fourth year in office, received a certificate of recognition for his leadership and achievements in driving Sierra Leone’s agricultural transformation.

FEED SALONE IN ACTION: 20,000 Bags of Local Rice for School Feeding!

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, has handed over 20,000 bags of locally produced rice to the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, launching the 2026/27 Home-Grown School Feeding Programme.

The handover took place at the WFP warehouse in Freetown, with the Ministry partnering with the World Food Programme under the Feed Salone initiative.

✅ 1 million kg of local rice procured (20,000 bags)
✅ Valued at NLe22 million (~US$1 million)
✅ School meals for children across 5 districts
✅ Direct income boost for rural farmers

With support from the World Bank-funded Food Systems Resilience Program (FSRP), Government is enabling WFP to buy directly from Sierra Leonean farmers — strengthening local markets while feeding our children.

This builds on last year's success: over 2,000 metric tonnes of local produce, feeding 250,000+ children across five districts.

Minister Sackey noted the programme's impact on school attendance, nutrition, and children's cognitive development.

Local farmers. Local rice. Local solutions. 🇸🇱

With a loan and matching grant from Microfinance under the Salone Access to Finance Project, implemented by UNCDF in partnership with the Ministry of and Food Security and funded by the , the organization has expanded its cassava processing business.

Today, Sinava produces a range of value-added products, including cassava yoghurt, cassava flour, and cassava chips, creating jobs, increasing incomes, and improving market opportunities. The organization’s success demonstrates how access to finance is empowering agri-MSMEs to grow, strengthen local value chains, and contribute to Sierra Leone’s agricultural transformation.
