Turning Assessment Findings into Quality Improvement Action 📊➡️🔄

The National Quality Management Program, in collaboration with the Directorate of Nutrition and with support from UNICEF, today 3rd September, 2026 convened a validation meeting for the findings of the Quality of Care (QoC) Assessment of Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) conducted across selected health facilities in Bo, Kenema, Pujehun, Western Rural and Western Urban Districts.

In attendance were key stakeholders including District Medical Officers, District Quality of Care Officers, Nutritionists, IPF Ward In-Charges and OTP Facility In-Charges which provided platform to critically review, validate and contextualize the assessment findings.

From a QI lens, assessment is not the endpoint—it is the starting point for improvement. The validation process provides an opportunity to move from “What did we find?” to “Why is this happening, and what can we do differently?”

The discussions therefore focused on identifying system gaps, root causes, and opportunities for targeted improvement to strengthen the quality of IMAM services.

The validated findings will serve as an important foundation for developing evidence-informed QI interventions that strengthen IMAM service delivery and ultimately improve outcomes for children affected by acute malnutrition.

Quality is not achieved by inspection alone; it is achieved by continuously improving the systems that deliver care.

Building a Culture of Quality Starts with Safe Care. 🏥

The National Quality Management Programme (NQMP), with support from FCDO through CONCERN Worldwide, has successfully concluded Phase One Safeguarding and Ethics Training for healthcare workers and Facility Management Committees (FMCs) in Bo, bringing together participants from Bo, Moyamba and Bonthe districts from 24th -26th August 2026.

The training strengthened participant’s understanding of safeguarding, ethical practice, patient rights, respectful care and accountability—key pillars of quality healthcare.

As Quality Improvement practitioners, we know that quality is not only about getting the clinical intervention right; it is also about ensuring that every person receives care safely, respectfully and with dignity …..especially vulnerable populations.

Safeguarding is Quality. Ethics is Quality. Safety is Quality.

Together, we continue to strengthen a health system where every patient is protected, every voice matters, and every facility strives for better care.

Strengthening Quality of Care, One Facility at a Time! 🇸🇱🏥

The National Quality Management Programme with support from JHPIEGO is taking quality improvement to the point of care.

As part of preparations for the upcoming QI Learning Session, National Quality of Care (QoC) Officers, Master Trainers and District QoC Officers are currently conducting onsite supportive supervision across health facilities In Pujehun, Port Loko and Bo districts.

The teams are working alongside facility QI teams to:
✅ Review progress on ongoing QI projects
✅ Identify implementation gaps and bottlenecks
✅ Strengthen the use of data for improvement
✅ Support teams to test, adapt and sustain change ideas
✅ Document lessons and prepare teams for the upcoming learning session

This is more than supervision—it is coaching, learning and problem-solving together with frontline health workers.

Our goal is simple: to build a culture of continuous quality improvement that translates into safer, more respectful and more effective care for every woman, newborn, child and client who accesses health services in Sierra Leone.

Quality is not an event. Quality is a continuous journey.

The National Quality Management Program is led by Matron Margaret T. T. Mannah, Program Manager, who provides strategic oversight and technical leadership for the design, implementation, and coordination of national quality improvement initiatives.

Her role focuses on strengthening systems, promoting evidence-based quality improvement, ensuring adherence to standards, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement across service delivery points.
