Her voice Karene District CONCLUDES ADOLESCENT EMPOWERMENT GATHERING
Theme: Safe Spaces, Peer Networks, and the Power to Decide
Dates: June 27-28, 2026 | Venue: Kamakwie Growth Center, Karene District

Her Voice, Karene District just wrapped a 2-day Adolescent Empowerment Gathering with over 30 adolescent girls and boys.

The Heart of the Program: Safe Space + Peer Networking

For two days, Kamakwie, Growth Center became a "judgment-free safe space" . Here, young people could speak openly, ask real questions, and learn without fear.

Inside the Safe Space, participants gained knowledge on:
1. The Right to Decide– Girls and boys learned they have the right to make decisions about their bodies, their education, their community, and their future.
2. Shaping Their Future– Sessions focused on choices that protect their dreams: staying in school, avoiding early sexual activity, and resisting pressure.
3. Sexual Violence Prevention– Clear conversations on what SGBV is, how to recognize it, how to say no, and where to get help.
4. Peer Networking, Adolescents built new friendships and support systems. They left knowing they are not alone. They now have peers they can talk to, learn from, and stand with.

We keep saying we want a safer future for our girls and boys. We keep saying we’re tired of silence, tired of seeing harm go unchecked.

But change doesn’t happen from the outside. It happens when we gather.

This is your call to be in the room.

The VIRELIA Forum by Her Voice Karene District, is more than an event. It’s a moment where community meets courage.

Why you need to be there:
For the young people: Because every girl and boy deserves to feel safe, heard, and protected in their own district. Your presence tells them they’re not alone.
For the community: Because real protection starts when leaders, parents, youth, and neighbors sit at the same table and take responsibility together.
For yourself: Because you have stories, ideas, and influence that Karene needs right now. Don’t keep them to yourself.

This is where we stop talking in small groups and start acting as one people.
Where silence ends. Where plans start. Where protection becomes real.

Karene, we can’t protect what we’re not willing to show up for.

We will continue to work hard towards the freedom, safety and protection of all women and girls 💯

Today, we proudly unveil and recognize Her Voice for its outstanding contribution to women empowerment, advocacy, and the protection of women and girls in Sierra Leone.

Her Voice is a female-led non-governmental organization established through community dialogue among young women and girls who shared a common vision of ending violence against women and girls. The organization serves as a platform committed to amplifying the voices of young women and girls while ensuring that their rights are protected, respected, and visible within society.

With a vision of creating a Karene District where women and girls live free from all forms of violence and are empowered to reach their full potential, Her Voice continues to champion advocacy, awareness raising, education, and community action against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

Through its programs and initiatives, the organization actively works to educate communities, empower women and girls, and promote safe and inclusive environments where young women can thrive, lead, and contribute positively to society.

Specifically, receiving this recognition has further strengthened Her Voice’s partnership and collaboration with the Western Area Rural District Students’ Union (WARDSU) in advocating, raising awareness, and supporting the implementation of the MOVE Grant initiative aimed at supporting and empowering vulnerable girls and young women.
Her Voice remains committed to promoting dignity, equality, protection, and empowerment for women and girls while encouraging community participation in the fight against violence and discrimination.

The Western Area Rural District Students’ Union proudly acknowledges Her Voice for its dedication, advocacy, partnership, and continued commitment to empowering and protecting women and girls in Sierra Leone.

To Every Sierra Leonean Girl: Your Future Is Free Too

Today, Sierra Leone marks 65 years of independence. 65 years since we chose to stand as a free nation, to write our own story, to believe in what we could become.

To every girl reading this: that freedom belongs to you too.

Independence is not just a flag, or a date in April. It is the right to dream without limits. It is the right to walk into a classroom and know you belong there. It is the right to speak and be heard, to lead and be followed, to build a life that is fully your own.

We know the road has not been easy. Many of you carry burdens no child should — early responsibility, silence when you should have safety, doubt when you deserve confidence. But look at our country. 65 years ago, people said we could not govern ourselves. Today, we do. People said we could not rise after hardship. Today, we build.

So we say to you: your story is still being written. The same courage that birthed this nation lives in you.

At Her Voice, we believe a better Sierra Leone is one where every girl is educated, protected, and empowered to choose her future. That future is not far away. It is in the girl who stays in school one more year. It is in the girl who says “no” and is respected. It is in the girl who lifts her hand in class, and later, lifts her community.

This independence, choose to believe in your own. Choose education. Choose your voice. Choose hope, even when it’s hard.

Because when Salone’s girls rise, Salone rises.

A free nation needs free girls. And your time is now.

On Thursday 12th the Team from Purposeful under the project paid a learning visit to its partners, and we at Her voice Karene District were honored to receive them. We're overflowing with gratitude for their presence and the opportunity to share our work and highlight how the MOVE project has empowered us to drive change. From strengthening partnerships to amplifying our impact, MOVE has been a catalyst for change, empowering us to walk the path of transformation and collaborate with other organizations to bring impactful change to the world. Thanks to the Purposeful team for the inspiring visit - we’re excited to keep amplifying voices and driving progress together!
