Minister Sackey Says BECE and NPSE Were Conducted Smoothly

The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Hon. Conrad Sackey, says the just concluded Basic Education Certificate Examination and the National Primary School Examination were conducted in a smooth and orderly manner.

Minister Sackey made the statement during an unannounced visit to BECE examination centres in Freetown.

Speaking on this year’s West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination, the Minister noted that there were several new dynamics, including the reintroduction of the Test of Practicals after many years.

He added that the Ministry looks forward to the release of the examination results to help identify lessons that can improve future examinations.

No Pupil Must Pay For Report Card – MBSSE Issues Stern Warning to Schools

The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has issued a firm warning to schools, teachers and education officials nationwide: no pupil should be charged any fee to collect a report card at the end of an academic term.

Reports have reached the ministry that some schools are demanding payments from parents and guardians before releasing end-of-term report cards.

MBSSE has declared such practices illegal, unacceptable and against government policy.

Report cards are a basic right of every pupil and their parents or guardians. They must not be withheld over unpaid fees or any unauthorised charges, the ministry stressed.

Parents and guardians are advised that if a school insists on payment before issuing a report card, they should demand an official receipt and report the matter at once.

Any request for money outside approved government guidelines is a serious violation and must be treated as such.

To enforce the directive, the public is urged to report offenders via the toll-free hotline 8060 or directly to senior education officials.

All complaints will be investigated, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against any school, teacher or official found to be in breach.

The warning comes as schools across Sierra Leone close the academic term and begin issuing report cards, a time when complaints about unauthorised charges often surface.

The directive reaffirms the Government of Sierra Leone’s commitment to the Free Quality School Education Programme, introduced to remove financial barriers that keep children out of school. Officials emphasised that no child should be denied educational services because of unofficial fees.

Teaching Service Commission Commences First Phase of Nationwide Teacher Licensure Examination

The Teaching Service Commission (TSC) has officially commenced the first phase of the Teacher Licensure Examination across Sierra Leone.

The examination is being conducted in line with Section 58(1) of the Sierra Leone Basic and Senior Secondary Education Act, 2023, which requires that all teachers be officially certified and licensed before they can practice as professional educators.

This important exercise is part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the teaching profession, improve the quality of education, and ensure that every teacher meets the required professional standards.

The TSC encourages all eligible teachers to participate fully in the licensure process and wishes every candidate success in the examination.

What a joy it was to celebrate our graduating pupils today.

There's an old African proverb I love: "The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second-best time is today." Nations aren't built in a day — they're built one child, one classroom, one graduation at a time.

Every president, every scientist, every doctor was once a small child clutching their first certificate, just like the ones I saw today. That is no small thing. That is the beginning of everything.

I want to thank the Turkish Maarif Foundation for going far beyond the classroom building libraries, labs, and sports fields, training our teachers, and even walking beside our pupils after graduation through scholarships and mentorship, so that no child's dream is cut short by what their family can or cannot afford.

To the parents: thank you for the early mornings and the homework checked by candlelight. To the teachers: never underestimate your influence one encouraging word can change a child's whole future.

And to our graduants: you are no longer the smallest in this school. Walk into your next classroom with your head high.

As another proverb reminds us: "The child who is carried on the back sees farther than the one who walks alone." We have carried you this far. Now, take your first steps forward and may you walk even farther than we ever imagined.
