Dear Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA
I am writing this letter not to express sentiments, but to formally complain about several incidents that occurred before and during the final involving Senegal and Morocco, which raise serious concerns about fair play, security, and officiating standards.
Before the final, during a public interview, the Moroccan coach clearly stated that Moroccan supporters would whistle the Senegalese players when they entered the stadium. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened. Moreover, there were insufficient security personnel to ensure that Senegalese players could access the training field peacefully. This lack of protection exposed our players to unnecessary hostility.
During the match, we observed several actions that go against the principles of fair play. The Senegalese team was brought to the field by train under inappropriate conditions. In addition, Achraf Hakimi and some Moroccan supporters took goalkeeper Édouard Mendy’s towels, an act clearly intended to destabilize and demoralize an opponent. These repeated tactics aimed at breaking the morale of the opposing team are not consistent with the values of football. He who seeks equity should come with clean hands. Morocco has a strong and talented team, and therefore should be able to win through fair play alone.
We are also compelled to denounce the referee’s performance, which appeared clearly biased. When Senegal scored, the referee immediately called a foul without consulting VAR. However, when Moroccan player Dias complained about a possible penalty, the referee checked VAR without hesitation. This inconsistency raises serious questions about neutrality and fairness. Furthermore, there was an offside situation prior to the corner kick that ultimately led to Morocco being awarded a penalty. This critical detail was overlooked, directly influencing the outcome of the match.
Additionally, when the Senegalese Team decided to leave the field and not continue the match, video evidence shows Moroccan security personnel physically assaulting Senegalese supporters in the stands. Such actions are unacceptable and require serious investigation.
As a nation, CAF and FIFA may choose to sanction us if it deems necessary. However, we want you to know that Senegal will always stand united as a team. No one can stop us from defending what we believe is right and just in football.
Senegal for life
