Boda boda robbery claims University of Juba finalist

A final-year Medical Laboratory Sciences student at the University of Juba was shot dead after suspected robbers allegedly robbed him of his motorcycle in Thongpiny, Juba, on Monday morning. The victim, John Uchalla Ukel, had been working as a boda boda rider to support himself, pay his tuition and help his family.

According to reports, Uchalla left Ramciel Hostel on the University of Juba campus early Monday to begin work before picking up two men who requested a ride to Thongpiny. Upon reaching their destination, the men allegedly shot him in the stomach, robbed him of his motorcycle and fled the scene.

Good Samaritans rushed Uchalla to the hospital, where he later died from excessive bleeding. The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of boda boda riders in Juba, many of whom rely on the trade as their primary source of income.

“John was not just a student. He was a hardworking young man who rode a boda boda to pay his tuition, support his family and pursue a better future,” his colleague, Emmanuel Pinyi, said in a tribute. “Many innocent people continue to lose their lives, while countless others risk everything every day riding boda bodas just to survive.” He added

Police had not issued an official statement or announced any arrests by the time of publication. The incident remains under investigation.

Kapoeta East commissioner killed amid Kessengor tensions

Kapoeta East County Commissioner was reportedly killed in an ambush Thursday while traveling to Kessengor, a disputed area claimed by both Eastern Equatoria State and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), according to state officials.

Eastern Equatoria Information Minister John Elia confirmed the incident, saying the commissioner was on a routine visit when his convoy came under attack. “The commissioner was going for his routine visit. But on his way to Kessengor, he was ambushed and killed,” Elia told Singaita FM.

The reported killing has drawn fresh attention to Kessengor, a longstanding flashpoint along the Eastern Equatoria-GPAA border. The area is inhabited by Jie communities, some administered under Eastern Equatoria and others under GPAA, contributing to competing territorial claims and periodic tensions.

GPAA Information Minister Jacob Werchum said his administration had not independently verified the report. “We are yet to receive an update on the ground. Kessengor is very far from Greater Pibor, so we are yet to receive an update from the commissioner of Boma County,” Werchum said.

Authorities have not identified those responsible for the attack. The incident comes amid recurring security concerns in the Kapoeta-Pibor border corridor, where disputes over territory and administration have fueled instability in recent years.

MUHOOZI KAINERUGABA RESPONDS TO CLAIMS OVER PRESIDENT KIIR’S BODYGUARDS.

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the First Son of Uganda and son of President Yoweri Museveni, said that they did not humiliate the bodyguards of President Salva Kiir Mayardit as the public claimed.

He stated that the real issue was that the protection team of Baba President Kiir was not well trained in security operations.

He added that they should learn from Uganda’s security forces in order to better protect the next leaders of South Sudan in the future.
