Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) was a printer, writer, inventor, diplomat, and Founding Father; the most widely recognized American of his time. A self-taught scientist who proved lightning is electricity, he also founded civic institutions including America's first public library and volunteer fire department. He helped draft the Declaration of Independence, secured crucial French support for the Revolution, and signed the U.S. Constitution at age 81.

The U.S. Department of State is realigning visa operations in Africa to regional hubs as part of a long-standing practice that strengthens national security by promoting more uniform screening, vetting, and adjudication standards, as well as improving efficiency and adjusting to shifting U.S. immigration policy priorities and objectives. Effective August 1, 2026, several U.S. Embassies and Consulates in Africa will no longer be offering routine visa services, including U.S. Embassy in South Sudan. Citizens and residents of South Sudan who wish to apply for a nonimmigrant U.S. visa must schedule an appointment and pay the required visa fee at the U.S. Embassy in Kampala, the new designated location. Immigrant Visa applicants will continue to apply with the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. Passed by British Parliament in 1774, the Intolerable Acts were four punitive laws designed to punish Massachusetts colonists for the Boston Tea Party, which occurred in protest against British taxation of American colonists without representation. The acts shut down Boston Harbor, nullified the colony's charter, allowed British officials to avoid colonial justice, and expanded quartering of soldiers in private homes. Rather than subduing the colonists, these harsh measures united them against British rule and led to the First Continental Congress.

Leaders who once claimed to end their people’s brutal marginalization now impose their own. Peace will require direct and genuine dialogue to avert further violence. This dialogue is untenable while the head of the second largest party to the 2018 peace agreement remains under house arrest and on trial.

On January 14, 1784, the Continental Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris that marked the end of the American Revolution and established the United States as a free and sovereign nation. After the eight years of brutal fighting, difficult and lengthy peace talks required strategic negotiation, moral clarity, and skillful diplomacy. To achieve lasting peace, the Second Continental Congress sent a trio of American titans — Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, and John Adams — who defended American interests and fortified our fledgling Republic.
