A farmer, mother and dedicated Boma Health Worker in Bentiu, Nyagit continues to bring essential health information and services closer to communities, even in the face of floods and conflict.
Her commitment reflects the vital role Boma Health Workers play in strengthening community health and protecting the lives of mothers and children across South Sudan.
Through the Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP), the Boma Health Initiative is being strengthened to bring essential healthcare closer to communities and support a stronger, more resilient health system.
We salute Nyagit and all Boma Health Workers for their service and dedication to the people of South Sudan.

This year, 8,045,167 mosquito nets have been distributed across South Sudan, helping protect families from malaria.
This includes children under five and pregnant women, two groups who need extra protection from malaria.

Wau — The Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP) Implementation Support Mission has concluded its visit to Wau with a strong call to accelerate health-worker incentive payments and strengthen essential health services.

Led by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Oromo Francis, the mission brought together national and state health authorities, partners and key stakeholders to gather first-hand information on the progress, challenges and priorities affecting health service delivery in Wau.

A key priority identified was the delay in health-worker incentive payments, with a call to review the current payment mechanism and ensure timely and predictable payments to support the welfare and motivation of frontline health workers.

The mission also prioritised strengthening Wau Teaching Hospital and referral services, improving epidemic preparedness in border and hard-to-reach areas, sustaining the Boma Health Initiative and community health workforce, and strengthening state and community ownership of health services.

As South Sudan navigates changing financing realities, the mission further emphasised sustainable financing, stronger partnerships, equitable support to underserved facilities, and greater collaboration across sectors to address the broader determinants of health.

Importantly, the mission called for a mechanism to track and follow up on agreed actions, ensuring that findings from the field translate into concrete improvements for health workers, communities and health facilities.

The mission reaffirmed Ministry of Health’s commitment to listening to frontline realities, identifying gaps and turning evidence into action to build a stronger, more resilient and sustainable health system for South Sudan.

The Health Sector Transformation Project is a government-led initiative supported by the World Bank and a consortium of donors with UNICEF South Sudan and WHO - Republic of South Sudan managing the funds.

A high-level delegation from the National Ministry of Health, led by the Undersecretary, Hon. Dr. Oromo Francis Seriano, has visited Western Bahr el Ghazal State as part of the quarterly Implementation Support Mission for the Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP)—a government-led initiative supported by the World Bank and a consortium of development partners.

The mission is aimed at assessing the progress, impact, implementation challenges, and results of the HSTP, while gathering first-hand information from health workers, facility managers, state authorities, and communities benefiting from the project.

The quarterly mission is more than a routine project visit. It creates an important opportunity for the National Ministry of Health and its partners to see implementation realities on the ground, measure progress against project objectives, identify bottlenecks, and work with state-level actors to find practical solutions.

During their visit to Wau, the delegation visited the State Secretariat, Wau Teaching Hospital, and Al Jazira Primary Health Care Centre (PHCC). The team also toured key departments and service-delivery units, engaging directly with health workers and listening to their experiences, achievements, concerns, and recommendations.

🏥 MILESTONE FOR SOUTH SUDAN’S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM 🇸🇸
Today, the Ministry of Health officially received the new Dry Medical Commodity Store—a major step forward in making essential medicines available to every community across South Sudan!
This facility significantly boosts our national storage capacity, improves commodity management, and protects essential supplies against stock-outs.
Dr. Oromo give special thanks to the Global Fund for financing, UNDP for leading construction, contractors, and technical teams for their dedication to making this facility a reality.
For Sustainable Investment, The Undersecretary called on UNICEF to move away from costly commercial warehouse rentals where they are currently spending roughly $2,000,000 annually and instead redirect those funds into constructing permanent, government-owned infrastructure. Building national assets over paying rent is key to long-term self-reliance.
