Following the successful launch of the Building Women’s Economic Resilience for Sustainable Peace (BWERSP) Project, the Capacity Building Training for Peacebuilding Actors on Gender Mainstreaming in Peacebuilding has commenced in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State, running from 19–21 August 2026.

In my remarks, I emphasized that women’s meaningful participation in peacebuilding is not a favour or an optional consideration, it is essential to achieving sustainable and lasting peace. I highlighted the need to move beyond commitments and policies towards concrete implementation and action, and from simply having women at the table to ensuring that women have meaningful influence in decisions and peace processes.

I also underscored the importance of strengthening gender-responsive approaches across conflict prevention, mediation, reconciliation and recovery.

The three-day training provides a practical platform for peacebuilding actors to deepen their understanding of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda, gender-responsive conflict analysis, inclusive conflict resolution, early warning systems, trauma-informed peacebuilding and localized action planning.

This is an important step towards strengthening institutions and peacebuilding actors to build a more inclusive, gender-responsive and sustainable peace in South Sudan.

Today, I had the honour of representing the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare at the official launch of the South Sudan component of the Building Women’s Economic Resilience for Sustainable Peace in the IGAD Region (BWERSP) project in Eastern Equatoria State.

The project is a partnership between The Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development, The National Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, the Ministry of Peace building and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) with support from the African Development Bank, with a focus on Eastern Equatoria, particularly Magwi County.

BWERSP will strengthen women’s access to land, build the economic resilience of returnee and vulnerable women, and place women at the centre of peacebuilding, conflict prevention and reconciliation.

For the Ministry, this initiative directly advances the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, particularly its four pillars of Participation, Protection, Prevention and Recovery.

As a Ministry, we will provide technical leadership on the Women, Peace and Security component and work with IGAD, relevant government institutions, the State Gender Technical Working Group, women-led organisations and community structures to ensure that women’s voices are heard and reflected in decisions that shape their lives.

To the women of Eastern Equatoria: this project is yours. Claim it, shape it and lead it.

When women are economically resilient and meaningfully involved in peacebuilding, communities become stronger and peace becomes more sustainable.

Investing in women is investing in peace, resilience and the future of South Sudan.

Honoured to deliver the opening remarks at the Regional Learning and Advocacy Forum on Localising the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in the Great Lakes Region, held in Juba on 11–12 August 2026.

The forum brought together governments, regional institutions, development partners, civil society and women-led organisations to reflect on how we can translate WPS commitments into meaningful action at grassroots level.

I emphasised three priorities: strengthening grassroots women’s leadership, strengthening accountability, and building regional solidarity.

Women are not merely victims of conflict; they are peacebuilders, leaders and agents of transformation. Our responsibility is to ensure they have the resources, protection, platforms and meaningful access to decision-making they deserve.

If we are serious about peace, security and development, we must place women at the centre of our collective efforts.

Yesterday, I had the honour of joining GREDO South Sudan’s International Youth Day 2026 celebration in Juba, held with support from UNICEF, the Government of South Sudan and other partners.

I commend GREDO for graduating 200 young people from vocational training programmes at Don Bosco TVET and Juba Prison TVET. This is a commendable investment in skills development and in the future of our young people.

The celebration was a powerful reminder that skills, education and opportunity can be pathways to peace, unity, self-reliance and positive change.

As Undersecretary, Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare , I reaffirm our commitment to supporting initiatives that empower young people especially young women to build their skills, realise their potential and contribute meaningfully to South Sudan’s development.

Our youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow; they are partners and leaders of today. 🇸🇸

Today, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare conducted a brief inspection visit to the Rajaf Educational Centre for Visually Impaired Persons (often referred to as the Rejaf School for the Blind and Deaf), located in the Juba suburb of Rejaf, to assess the current status of the facility and identify the challenges affecting its completion.

The Centre was established to promote inclusive education and empower persons with disabilities through access to quality learning and skills development. The facility includes an administrative block, classrooms, and specialized training halls designed to provide life skills and vocational training for learners with visual and hearing impairments. Once completed and operational, the Centre is expected to significantly expand access to inclusive education and capacity-building opportunities for persons with disabilities from across South Sudan.

During the visit, officials explained that construction of the Centre commenced in 2010 but has not yet been completed or formally handed over for public use. As a result of the prolonged delay, parts of the unfinished infrastructure have begun to deteriorate, with sections of the ceiling already showing signs of collapse, highlighting the urgent need for rehabilitation and completion works.

Stakeholders identified inadequate funding as the primary obstacle to completing and furnishing the Centre. They emphasized that timely investment is essential to prevent further deterioration and ensure that the facility can begin serving its intended beneficiaries.

The visit also highlighted the broader vision for the Rejaf facility as a multidisciplinary service hub that will bring together police officers, medical professionals, social workers, and matrons to provide coordinated, survivor-centred services. The Centre is expected to offer temporary accommodation and integrated support services for survivors for up to three months while receiving recovery assistance, psychosocial support, and case management.

The Undersecretary reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to advancing the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities and strengthening protection services for vulnerable populations. The Ministry will continue engaging with the Government and development partners to mobilize the resources required to complete and operationalize this important national institution.

The Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare remains committed to ensuring that no one is left behind and that every person, regardless of disability, has equal access to education, protection, and opportunities to reach their full potential.

Today, I paid a surprise visit to Nile Orphan Care, and what I encountered was both deeply emotional and inspiring.

Spending time with the children and listening to the caregivers reminded me that behind every child is a story, a dream, and incredible potential waiting to be nurtured. Despite the challenges they face, the smiles, courage, and hope of these children are a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to ensure that no child is left behind.

The visit also highlighted the urgent need for greater support. Nile Orphan Care requires assistance with food, clothing, healthcare, education, safe accommodation, learning materials, recreational facilities, and other essential needs that contribute to the healthy growth and development of children. The dedicated caregivers also need support and encouragement to continue providing the love, protection, and guidance these children deserve.

Government alone cannot address every challenge. I therefore encourage individuals, businesses, development partners, humanitarian organisations, faith-based institutions, and all people of goodwill to extend a helping hand. Support does not always have to be enormous; sometimes, a small act of kindness can make a meaningful difference in the life of a child.

Every child deserves more than survival. Every child deserves love, protection, education, dignity, and the opportunity to dream of a better future.

I left Nile Orphan Care inspired by the resilience of the children and encouraged by the dedication of those caring for them. Their courage should challenge all of us to do more, care more, and work together to build a society where every child feels seen, protected, valued, and supported.

Our children are not only the future; they are our responsibility today. Together, we can give them hope. Together, we can make a difference.

On 7 July 2026, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare accompanied the Honourable Minister on an official visit to the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Helpline Centre to assess its progress, operations, and responsiveness.

During the visit, the Ministry’s leadership engaged with the social workers operating the Helpline and listened to their experiences, achievements, and challenges in providing timely support and assistance to survivors and individuals seeking help.

The engagement provided an important opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the Helpline, including the nature of calls received, the responsiveness of the service, and the challenges faced by social workers in providing appropriate information, support, and referrals.

One of the key issues highlighted during the visit was the need to expand services beyond regular working hours, particularly in response to calls received at night. The Undersecretary emphasised the importance of strengthening the operational capacity of the GBV Helpline, including the introduction of night shifts, to ensure that individuals in need of support can access timely assistance whenever emergencies arise.

She further highlighted the importance of strengthening and expanding the toll-free service to make the Helpline accessible to people across the country, particularly vulnerable individuals and communities who may face financial and communication barriers when seeking assistance.

The Undersecretary called upon relevant institutions, telecommunications service providers, development partners, and other stakeholders to support the Ministry in strengthening and expanding this important national initiative.

She also commended the dedication and commitment of the social workers operating the Helpline and acknowledged their important role in providing frontline support, information, and referral services to those affected by gender-based violence.

The visit reaffirmed the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare’s commitment to strengthening national GBV prevention and response mechanisms and ensuring that accessible, confidential, survivor-centred, and responsive services are available to those who need them.
