Today, I paid a surprise visit to Nile Orphan Care, and what I encountered was both deeply emotional and inspiring.

Spending time with the children and listening to the caregivers reminded me that behind every child is a story, a dream, and incredible potential waiting to be nurtured. Despite the challenges they face, the smiles, courage, and hope of these children are a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to ensure that no child is left behind.

The visit also highlighted the urgent need for greater support. Nile Orphan Care requires assistance with food, clothing, healthcare, education, safe accommodation, learning materials, recreational facilities, and other essential needs that contribute to the healthy growth and development of children. The dedicated caregivers also need support and encouragement to continue providing the love, protection, and guidance these children deserve.

Government alone cannot address every challenge. I therefore encourage individuals, businesses, development partners, humanitarian organisations, faith-based institutions, and all people of goodwill to extend a helping hand. Support does not always have to be enormous; sometimes, a small act of kindness can make a meaningful difference in the life of a child.

Every child deserves more than survival. Every child deserves love, protection, education, dignity, and the opportunity to dream of a better future.

I left Nile Orphan Care inspired by the resilience of the children and encouraged by the dedication of those caring for them. Their courage should challenge all of us to do more, care more, and work together to build a society where every child feels seen, protected, valued, and supported.

Our children are not only the future; they are our responsibility today. Together, we can give them hope. Together, we can make a difference.

On 7 July 2026, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare accompanied the Honourable Minister on an official visit to the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Helpline Centre to assess its progress, operations, and responsiveness.

During the visit, the Ministry’s leadership engaged with the social workers operating the Helpline and listened to their experiences, achievements, and challenges in providing timely support and assistance to survivors and individuals seeking help.

The engagement provided an important opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the Helpline, including the nature of calls received, the responsiveness of the service, and the challenges faced by social workers in providing appropriate information, support, and referrals.

One of the key issues highlighted during the visit was the need to expand services beyond regular working hours, particularly in response to calls received at night. The Undersecretary emphasised the importance of strengthening the operational capacity of the GBV Helpline, including the introduction of night shifts, to ensure that individuals in need of support can access timely assistance whenever emergencies arise.

She further highlighted the importance of strengthening and expanding the toll-free service to make the Helpline accessible to people across the country, particularly vulnerable individuals and communities who may face financial and communication barriers when seeking assistance.

The Undersecretary called upon relevant institutions, telecommunications service providers, development partners, and other stakeholders to support the Ministry in strengthening and expanding this important national initiative.

She also commended the dedication and commitment of the social workers operating the Helpline and acknowledged their important role in providing frontline support, information, and referral services to those affected by gender-based violence.

The visit reaffirmed the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare’s commitment to strengthening national GBV prevention and response mechanisms and ensuring that accessible, confidential, survivor-centred, and responsive services are available to those who need them.

I was pleased to join the Patriots for Progress Foundation, in collaboration with the South Sudan National Youth Union, GradAid Organization, and volunteers from across Juba, in a cleaning initiative at the Juvenile National Prison (Kobar) as part of the 15 Days of Patriotism Campaign 2026.

I sincerely commend the Chairperson of the Patriots for Progress Foundation Akuot Sarah Dut and the entire team for demonstrating that patriotism is not only expressed in words, but through service, responsibility, and meaningful action.

During the visit, I also toured the juvenile facilities, particularly the classrooms, to better understand the conditions in which the children are living and learning. Every child, regardless of their circumstances, deserves dignity, protection, education, and an environment conducive to rehabilitation and development.

I call upon the business community, institutions, development partners, and people of goodwill to complement Government efforts by providing in-kind support to help improve the learning and living conditions at the facility.

As we commemorate South Sudan’s 15th Independence Anniversary, let us remember that nation-building is a shared responsibility. Together, through service and collective action, we can build a better South Sudan. 🇸🇸

I am deeply honoured to have been invited as the Guest of Honour at the upcoming welcoming ceremony for newly admitted students and the inauguration of the newly elected leadership of the Twic Students’ Association in Universities and Higher Institutes in Juba (TSAUHI).

My sincere appreciation to the TSAUHI leadership for this kind invitation and the confidence placed in me to be part of such an important occasion. I was honoured to deliver the opening remarks at the Strengthening Women’s Parliamentary Leadership and Electoral Readiness Training for members of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, organized by UN Women South Sudan with support from the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund.

In my remarks, I emphasized that women’s political participation is not only a constitutional and democratic imperative but also essential to sustainable peace and inclusive governance. I also underscored the importance of advancing key pending gender-related Bills, strengthening electoral preparedness, and ensuring that leaders remain connected to and accountable to the constituencies they serve.

As South Sudan prepares for its democratic transition, investing in the leadership of women is investing in a more peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous future.

Together, let us continue championing women’s leadership and building a democracy where every voice counts.

Today, on the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, I reflect on a journey of service, leadership, and learning that has taken me from humanitarian response and community engagement to academic and research spaces, regional institutions, and national leadership.

My experiences working with humanitarian organizations, engaging in research and policy development, contributing to regional initiatives through the African Union Commission, and participating in international platforms have reinforced my belief that diplomacy is not limited to foreign affairs, it is about building bridges, fostering understanding, advancing peace, and creating opportunities for people to thrive.

As the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare in South Sudan, I am honoured to serve my country at a time when the voices, rights, and aspirations of women, children, youth, and vulnerable communities must remain at the centre of national development. Every policy dialogue, community engagement, partnership, and reform effort is an opportunity to contribute to a more peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous South Sudan.

Throughout my journey, I have witnessed the resilience of South Sudanese women and communities who continue to overcome immense challenges with courage and determination. Their strength inspires my commitment to public service and to advancing gender equality, social justice, peacebuilding, and human development.

On this day, I celebrate women diplomats, negotiators, public servants, academics, peacebuilders, and leaders who represent their nations and communities with integrity and purpose. I also encourage young women and girls to believe in their potential to lead, influence decisions, and shape the future of our continent and the world.

Serving South Sudan nationally, regionally, and internationally has taught me that leadership is ultimately about service to people. It is about ensuring that our work translates into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens and contributes to a stronger, more equitable, and more peaceful nation.

Today, I had the privilege of joining colleagues from government institutions, development partners, civil society organisations, UN agencies, and technical experts at the Validation Workshop for the South Sudan Care Economy Assessment, convened by the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare with the support of UN Women.

The workshop provided an important opportunity to review and validate evidence on the realities of paid and unpaid care work in South Sudan and its impact on the lives of women, girls, families, and communities.

During her remarks, the Hon. Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Nuna Rhoda Rudolf, highlighted that the care economy is one of the most important yet often overlooked pillars of national development. She emphasized that women and girls continue to bear a disproportionate burden of unpaid care work, including caring for children, older persons, persons with disabilities, and the sick, while also carrying out labour-intensive tasks such as collecting water and firewood. She called for greater efforts to recognise, reduce, and redistribute unpaid care work, and urged increased investment in care services, including the progressive realization of the commitment to allocate at least 10 percent of the national budget to gender programming.

Speaking on behalf of UN Women, Country Representative Delphine Serumaga noted that women and girls in South Sudan spend four to six times more hours on unpaid care work than men, a challenge that is further exacerbated by limited access to clean water, energy, childcare services, and other essential infrastructure. She reaffirmed UN Women’s commitment to supporting gender-responsive care policies through the 5R Framework: Recognise, Reduce, Redistribute, Reward, and Represent.

In my remarks as Undersecretary of the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, I underscored that this assessment provides critical evidence on the realities of care work and its impact on the social, economic, and leadership opportunities available to women and girls. I encouraged participants to actively contribute to strengthening and validating the findings to ensure they effectively inform future policies, programmes, and investments.

I was also encouraged by the contribution from the National Bureau of Statistics, which highlighted the importance of strengthening data systems and conducting a national Time Use Survey to better measure and value unpaid care work as part of our national development agenda.

The validation of this assessment marks an important step towards building a more equitable and inclusive society where care work is recognised as a vital contribution to our economy and social well-being. Investing in care is not only about supporting women and families—it is about accelerating sustainable development and creating opportunities for all.

Investing in care is investing in families, communities, and the future of South Sudan.
