Today, the National Public Health Institute (NPHI) and the Ministry of Health - Republic of South Sudan, with support from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), launched the National Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment and Risk Profiling workshop.

The four-day workshop, involving 35 participants from various government institutions and development partners to identify major hazards, evaluate vulnerabilities, and prioritise preparedness actions. It aims to promote a collective and coordinated approach to health security, providing a systematic, transparent, and evidence-based method to identify and classify key risks and assess their likelihood and impact.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Ader Macar Aciek, the newly appointed Acting Executive Director of the National Public Health Institute (NPHI), emphasised the need for a comprehensive national multi-hazard risk profile to inform practical strategies for preparedness, prevention, mitigation, and response.

Dr. Ader expressed his gratitude to Africa CDC for its technical and financial support, noting South Sudan's distinction as one of the first countries to have a dedicated country representative. He called for continued collaboration between Africa CDC, the Ministry of Health, and NPHI to ensure that technical assistance and investments remain aligned with national priorities.

Africa CDC Country Director, Dr. Tolbert Geewleh Nyenswah highlighted efforts to address health risks in South Sudan through a multi-sectoral approach targeting epidemics, climate issues, and humanitarian challenges.
β€œWe didn't come here for a single event and then leave; we continue to support the country's capacity-building efforts," said Dr. Nyenswah.

Since 2017, Africa CDC has supported the establishment and strengthening of national public health institutes across Africa and is now expanding its focus to the regional level. South Sudan remains a priority, with a senior director assigned to support national teams in strengthening the country's public health security and preparedness capacities.

On Saturday, the Master Training of Trainers (MTOT) Team arrived in Yambio, Western Equatoria State, to commence their training activities. Upon arrival, the team held a brief meeting with the State Minister of Health, Hon. Nama Bakubu, and representatives from partner organisations, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), Amref Health Africa, and World Vision.

The discussion focused on the county's preparedness, specifically examining the availability and readiness of Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) and participants on the ground, as well as arrangements for hall hiring and catering services for the upcoming training sessions.

Additionally, the team briefed the minister on the MTOT's overall readiness, noting that all necessary training materials and resources had been secured and were ready for deployment. The team also emphasised that trained teams from Yambio, Nzara, EZO, and Tumbura would be present on the ground to support the training and implementation activities.

𝐉𝐔𝐁𝐀 | 5 August 2026 β€” As part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen preparedness against the Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease (BVD), the National Public Health Institute and the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with International Medical Corps (IMC) and UNICEF South Sudan conducted a one-day case management training for healthcare workers (HCWs) from both public and private health facilities across Juba.

The training aims to equip frontline healthcare workers with essential skills in basic infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. It is designed to enable them to promptly identify potential BVD cases, implement immediate response protocols, safely isolate suspected patients, execute rapid patient referral procedures, and initiate effective BVD case management.

A total of 90 participants were selected from 12 health facilities, including government health facilities, private clinics, and health centres in Juba. Participants are also expected to gain up-to-date knowledge on the current epidemiological status of BVD, review national control strategies, and understand the risks of disease importation into South Sudan. The training includes practical demonstrations on the correct procedures for donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure maximum safety and minimize infection risk.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Kediende Chong, the Executive Director of the National Public Health Institute, urged participants to approach the training with seriousness and commitment, emphasizing the critical role their enhanced skills will play in preventing the spread of BVD.
Dr. Chong also expressed sincere gratitude to the partners supporting these efforts, including IMC and UNICEF, acknowledging their vital contributions in strengthening South Sudan’s capacity to manage and contain Ebola preparedness effectively.

Today, the National Public Health Institute (NPHI), led by Dr. Kediende Mapuor Chong, met with the Secretary General of the South Sudan Council of Churches (SSCC), Rev. Tut Kon, his team, and UNDP South Sudan to discuss Ebola preparedness and the vital role of religious leaders, faith-based organisations, and their wider networks.

Religious leaders are trusted voices in the community. They influence accurate information, promote positive behaviours, and help communities prepare and respond during public health emergencies.

Although South Sudan has not confirmed any Ebola cases, the country remains at high risk due to its proximity to outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda and the potential for cross-border spillover. For this reason, the 15 counties bordering Uganda and the DRC have been prioritized for Ebola preparedness activities.

Religious leaders can play a crucial role by raising community awareness, encouraging early reporting of suspected cases, supporting risk communication and community engagement (RCCE), assisting with community-based contact tracing, and helping to ensure safe and dignified burials when needed.

Through the South Sudan Council of Churches' extensive network of Christians and its collaboration with the Islamic Council and other faith leaders, including traditional leaders, these messages and interventions can reach communities across the country.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to finalise a joint work plan and strengthen coordination between the National Public Health Institute and the South Sudan Council of Churches, with support from UNDP and UNICEF.

Engaging faith leaders at this stage will enhance South Sudan's preparedness and help protect communities should an Ebola case be detected.

On Saturday, the United States Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Disaster and Humanitarian Response Mr. Taylor Garrett, accompanied by U.S. Embassy Juba, South Sudan Ambassador to South Sudan H.E. Michael J. Adler and representatives from UNICEF South Sudan, WFP, IOM South Sudan, UNDP South Sudan, International Medical Corps, Africa CDC, and other key health partners, visited the Infectious Diseases Unit (IDU) along the Juba-Yei road.

The visit is aimed to inspect the ongoing Ebola preparedness and response efforts at the site, assess the readiness of the containment infrastructure, and evaluate the effectiveness of current response protocols.

Upon arrival, the delegation was welcomed by NPHI Executive Director Dr. Kediende Mapuor Chong who detailed the facility’s current capabilities, including recent training activities conducted for health workers, as well as ongoing surveillance mechanisms such as contact tracing, early warning systems, and community engagement initiatives aimed at early detection and swift containment of any potential Ebola cases.

This facility is funded by EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid and has been designated as an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) isolation and treatment centre, equipped with specialised containment measures and isolation wards.

During the meeting, both sides discussed ongoing collaboration between NPHI and Africa CDC, focusing on strengthening coordination mechanisms for Ebola preparedness and response.

The session brought together healthcare workers and public health experts to boost key outbreak response skills. Over three days, participants moved from basic concepts to practical simulations:

Day 1 (Foundations & Core Measures): Attendees learned about IPC pillars like hand hygiene, screening, isolation, and the principles of SDB, including cultural considerations.

Day 2 (Practical Skills & Bio-Safety): The focus was on hands-on practice, including correctly donning and doffing PPE for Bundibugyo virus risk assessment. Facilitators guided participants through ambulance and transport procedures, waste management, cleaning, post-exposure care, and the preparation of chlorine disinfectants, all under strict safety protocols.

Day 3 (Field Simulations & Certification): The training concluded with a detailed field exercise on Safe and Dignified Burials, covering Phases 1 (Preparation & Community Engagement) and 2 (Safe Body Handling & Burial). This was followed by a debrief, evaluations, and a certification ceremony.

With ongoing mentorship from skilled facilitators and robust collaboration with partners, the IPC & SDB Pillar continues to strengthen the frontline workforce. This effort helps protect communities, ensure clinical safety, and handle the deceased with respect and dignity during public health crises.

Right Place, Right Time: How South Sudan is Rebuilding Its Ebola Supply Chain to Save Lives

Ensuring that life-saving supplies reach the right place at the right time is essential for an effective Ebola response. As part of the Master Training of Trainers (MTOT) for Ebola Preparedness and Response, the Operations and Supply Chain Management Pillar held a three-day breakout session to build the skills of logisticians, pharmacists, and support staff who are crucial in emergency preparedness and response.

The training provided participants with practical skills in emergency supply chain management, covering product selection and prioritisation, forecasting and quantification of Ebola commodities, procurement planning, inventory and warehouse management, strategic prepositioning in high-risk areas, distribution planning, Logistics Management Information Systems (LMIS), healthcare waste management, and the role of
logisticians within Rapid Response Teams (RRTs).

Through interactive discussions and exercises, participants explored ways to improve coordination, accountability, and the use of high-quality logistics data to support timely, informed decision-making.
Building on lessons from previous Ebola outbreaks, the session emphasised the importance of resilient supply chains, strong multi-sectoral collaboration, and adherence to standard operating procedures to maintain access to essential commodities during outbreaks. Participants identified priority actions to strengthen preparedness and supply chain readiness across the country's 15 high-risk counties.

By investing in a skilled logistics workforce and resilient supply chains, South Sudan is enhancing its ability to detect, respond to, and contain Ebola outbreaks. A well-prepared supply system not only ensures the delivery of essential supplies but also saves lives, protects health workers, and guarantees communities receive necessary support when it matters most.
