The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) was first established as a Directorate of Grade &Standards of the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Supply in 2006 vide Republican Decree through Council of Ministersโ€™ Resolution 116/2006 and later created as a full fledged Bureau in 2012 via SSNBS Act to take charge of development of standards, inspection and quality assurance&, and metrology, testing and calibration services in the Republic of South Sudan

The Executive Director of the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS), Hon. Oiylang Dominic Kanuto, today received a delegation from Caritas Switzerland's South Sudan Office for a courtesy meeting to explore areas of mutual cooperation.

The discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between the two institutions, particularly in supporting traders, enhancing product quality and safety, and protecting public health through effective standards and quality assurance systems.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both parties expressing their commitment to fostering a strong partnership that contributes to sustainable trade and consumer protection in South Sudan.

The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) has officially commenced a five-day training on ISO/IEC 17020: Conformity Assessment โ€“ Requirements for the Operation of Various Types of Bodies Performing Inspection, running from 20โ€“24 July 2026.

The training brings together Quality Assurance Inspectors from SSNBS and is organized under the EU-funded MARKUP II Programme, implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC).

The initiative reflects the commitment of the SSNBS leadership to continuous staff capacity building, recognizing that a skilled workforce is the cornerstone of a strong and effective national standards institution. By enhancing inspectors' knowledge and competence in ISO/IEC 17020, the training will strengthen inspection processes, improve service delivery, and support the Bureau's journey toward international best practices.

Through the continued support of the European Union and ITC under the MARKUP II Programme, SSNBS is advancing its technical capacity to facilitate safe trade, protect consumers, and promote quality compliance in South Sudan.

The three-day National Quality Policy (NQP) Review Workshop concluded with a renewed commitment from participants representing academia, the private sector, development partners, government institutions, and the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) to strengthen and advance South Sudan's National Quality Infrastructure.

Representing the International Trade Centre (ITC), Dr. Kuorwel Kuai Kuorwel reaffirmed ITC's commitment to supporting SSNBS. He emphasized that South Sudan's rich natural resources can only compete in regional and international markets by meeting quality and safety standards. He noted that the National Quality Policy Framework will strengthen the country's quality infrastructure and trade competitiveness.

In his closing remarks, Hon. Oiylang Dominic, Executive Director of SSNBS, expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their dedication throughout the workshop. He emphasized that the National Quality Policy will strengthen trade, consumer protection, and alignment with international standards.
He called for a shift from planning to implementation, reaffirming the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards' (SSNBS) commitment to working closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the National Quality Policy.

The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) today launched a three-day National Quality Policy Review Workshop aimed at reviewing and strengthening the countryโ€™s National Quality Policy, which was endorsed by the Economic Cluster in 2023 and is awaiting final approval by the Council of Ministers.

In his opening remarks, the Executive Director of SSNBS, Hon. Oiylang Dominic, expressed his appreciation to all participants for their valuable technical contributions and commitment towards strengthening South Sudanโ€™s National Quality Infrastructure. He also acknowledged the continued support of the International Trade Centre (ITC) through the EU-supported project in 2021, which contributed to the development of the National Quality Policy.

Hon. Oiylang highlighted that the workshop provides an important opportunity to assess the policy, identify areas requiring updates, and integrate emerging national priorities and international best practices before its submission for final approval. He emphasized that this review process will ensure the policy remains relevant, practical, and responsive to South Sudanโ€™s long-term development objectives.

The review workshop brings together representatives from government institutions, development partners, private sector stakeholders, academia and technical experts to contribute their insights toward finalizing a comprehensive and effective National Quality Policy for South Sudan.

The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS), with the continued support of the International Trade Centre (ITC) under MARKUP II Project, has commenced practical training on the operation and application of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for its laboratory personnel.

The hands-on training is designed to equip technical staff with the practical knowledge and skills required to operate, maintain, and effectively utilize the HPLC system for laboratory analysis. The programme focuses on sample preparation, instrument operation, calibration, analytical procedures, quality assurance, data interpretation, and routine maintenance in accordance with internationally recognized laboratory practices.

At the invitation of Aklile Habtemariam, Country Manager for South Sudan and Liberia within the Office for Africa at the International Trade Centre, the South Sudan National Bureau of Standard delegation paid a courtesy visit to the ITC headquarters in Geneva.

The delegation was led by Hon. Oiylang Kanuto, Executive Director of the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards, who expressed appreciation to the ITC team for their warm welcome and hospitality.
During the meeting, Hon. Oiylang highlighted achievements under ongoing ITC-supported projects and presented priority areas requiring further support, including capacity building, laboratory equipment, policy development, digitalization, and strengthening the national quality infrastructure.

The ITC team commended the leadership and vision of the Executive Director and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting SSNBS in advancing quality standards and laboratory accreditation efforts.

Dorothy Tembo, Deputy Executive Director of ITC, also reaffirmed ITCโ€™s continued support to SSNBS and emphasized the importance of prioritizing projects that will strengthen South Sudanโ€™s quality infrastructure.
The meeting was constructive and interactive, further reinforcing the strong partnership between ITC and SSNBS.

As part of the ongoing institutional capacity-building support provided by the International Trade Centre (ITC), the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) has commenced a comprehensive series of technical training programmes for its staff.

The training programme, implemented with the support of ITC, focuses on internationally recognized standards and conformity assessment systems, including ISO 22000 (Food Safety Management Systems), ISO 9001 (Quality Management Systems), ISO/IEC 17065 (Requirements for Certification Bodies), ISO/IEC 17021-1 (Requirements for Bodies Providing Audit and Certification of Management Systems), ISO/IEC 17020 (Requirements for Inspection Bodies), as well as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).

The Republic of South Sudan is participating in the 49th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49), taking place at the International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG) in Geneva, Switzerland.

The delegation is led by Hon. Oiylang Dominic, Executive Director of the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS), who is representing the country at this important global gathering on food standards and food safety.

As a Member of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, South Sudan joins other member countries in deliberating and adopting new international food standards, electing the Commission's leadership, and strengthening international cooperation through networking and the exchange of experiences. The session provides a valuable platform for promoting food safety, facilitating fair trade practices, and protecting consumer health worldwide.

South Sudan's participation reaffirms the country's commitment to contributing to the development and implementation of internationally recognized food standards that enhance public health, improve food quality, and facilitate access to regional and global markets.
