OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

The Ministry of Education and Instructions has issued a directive to all private schools in South Sudan to cease charging school fees in US dollars. This decision follows an assessment that revealed some schools in Juba were demanding termly payments of $100-$300 per child.

Parents had raised concerns about this practice to the state and national Ministry of Education and Instructions over the past three weeks. In response, the State Ministry of Education and Instructions convened a meeting with directors and head teachers at Juba One Girls' Primary School, instructing them to charge school fees in South Sudanese pounds.

Ustaz Lawente Williams Alex, Director General at the State Ministry of Education and Instructions, emphasized the need for private schools to charge reasonable fees in pounds, considering that parents receive their salaries in the local currency. He cautioned that exorbitant fees would burden parents, making it challenging for them to provide for their children's education and basic needs.

In a related development, the Director General directed schools not to register Senior One students before the release of national examination results. Non-compliance will result in penalties, including school closure and withdrawal of registration certificates.

Furthermore, schools were instructed not to collect reams and toilet papers from students, as these expenses can be burdensome for parents. Instead, schools should allocate a portion of the school fees to purchase these essential items.

The Director General commended private schools for their contributions to eradicating illiteracy in South Sudan, acknowledging that they accommodate a significant number of students nationwide.
