Lao PDR’s sacred That Sikhottabong stupa in Khammouane: A golden landmark by the Mekong

That Sikhottabong is located along the banks of the Mekong River just 6 kilometers from Thakhaek, this sacred 29-meter golden stupa is one of the most revered religious sites in Lao PDR. Originally constructed during the Sikhottabong Empire by King Nanthasene for King Soummitham—and built contemporaneously with Savannakhet's That Inhang and Thailand's That Phanom to enshrine the bones of Lord Buddha—the monument was later restored in the 16th century by King Saysetthathirath. Today, it remains a vital spiritual destination, drawing visitors and devotees alike, particularly during its annual festival held in the third month of the lunar calendar.

Artist-led project supports cultural tourism development in Guangxi village in China

Chixi Village in Beihai, Guangxi, China, has developed into a cultural tourism destination following two years of collaboration between the local government, villagers and artists from Tsinghua University’s Academy of Arts and Design. The initiative combines public art, farming and study-tour activities, with 15 hands-on activity venues offering experiences such as tie-dyeing and pottery. In 2025, the village received 85,000 visitors and generated more than RMB 3 million (about USD 420,000) in revenue, with study tours contributing more than half of its collective income and creating new livelihood opportunities for local residents.

Cambodia Tourism Board Launches Cultural Pop-up Shows to Bring Living Heritage to Life in Siem Reap

The Cambodia Tourism Board has introduced a Cultural Pop-up Show initiative to enrich Siem Reap’s visitor experience through complimentary, twice-weekly performances of UNESCO-inscribed traditional arts, specifically Kun Lbokator martial arts and Lkhon Sbek Thom shadow theatre. Launching on September 18, 2026, at prominent locations like the Terrace of the Elephants and the Siem Reap riverbank, these spontaneous, immersive events are designed to showcase Cambodia’s living heritage beyond conventional temple tours. Endorsed by local authorities and the Cambodian Hotel Association, the strategic program aims to transform public spaces into vibrant cultural hubs, thereby encouraging longer tourist stays, stimulating the local nighttime economy, and reinforcing Siem Reap’s standing as a premier, dynamic cultural destination. Viet Nam shifts tourism focus from visitor numbers to quality, sustainability and higher value by 2030

The Government of Viet Nam has launched a comprehensive action program to transform tourism into a core economic driver by 2030, targeting 45-50 million international visitors, $80-90 billion in revenue, and a direct GDP contribution of 10-12%. To rank among Southeast Asia's top three tourism economies, the strategy shifts from volume-driven resource exploitation to sustainable, high-value models focusing on cultural, marine, wellness, and culinary tourism designed to attract high-spending, long-staying markets. Supported by a 2026-2035 National Tourism Promotion Program, the initiative prioritizes digital transformation, green infrastructure, and smart governance while fostering a nationwide "every citizen is a tourism ambassador" movement to cement Viet Nam as a leading, high-quality destination in Asia.

Thai government authorizes financial backing for the construction of a new bridge across the Mekong River in Luang Prabang

Thailand has approved a THB 1.78 billion (USD 55.4 million) loan to help Lao PDR construct the Xiengman-Luang Prabang Mekong Bridge, with construction slated for 2027 and completion expected by 2031. Connecting Luang Prabang town to the Chomphet district on the opposite bank, the bridge will establish a vital transport corridor extending to Thailand’s Nan Province, reducing the current nine-hour travel time by 30 to 45 minutes to boost cross-border trade and tourism. This development complements Luang Prabang's new 80-kilometer ring road designed to bypass its UNESCO heritage center and expands Thailand's ongoing regional infrastructure investments, which include the recently opened 5th Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge and highway upgrades linking to Viet Nam.
