Generation Equality: Realizing women’s rights for an equal future | Get involved

Generation Equality Forum 2021.
Denmark has long been at the forefront as one of the most progressive countries in the fight for girls and women's rights, particularly sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

Your body does not belong to anybody, but to you.
Still, in many countries only half of women and girls are able to decide over their own bodies. We must change this together.

Women have a better chance to reach their full potential when they can decide if, when, with whom and how many children they want.

At #GenerationEqualityForum, governments, civil society, youth, corporations and change makers from around the world come together to take action.

Denmark 🇩🇰 proudly commits to #ActForEqual and women and girls' right to make their own choices and lead the life they want.

The Generation Equality Forum 2021 takes place in Paris from 30 June to 2 July.

#ActForEqual #GenerationEquality #bodilyautonomy #SRHR

Imagine a world where all people have equal rights and opportunities. Women and girls are not afraid of walking home late at night, and men and boys are not trapped in oppressive masculinities. In this world, gender equality is the norm. Let’s make this a reality. Join UN Women’s Generation Equa...

June 25 marks the International Seafarers Day ⛵️🌏
Denmark has a long and proud maritime history. 400 years ago, Denmark was a leading European maritime power and this paved the way for the first ever contact between Denmark and Thailand 🇩🇰🇹🇭

For King Christian IV, who ruled Denmark at the time, any expansion outside of Scandinavia and northern Europe was strictly about trade. Therefore, the Danish King decided to send a merchant ship, The Øresund, to the waters around Sri Lanka (Ceylon) in 1618 to explore the possibilities of trade.
The Øresund, which was later joined by other Danish merchant ships, ended up in Tranquebar, India, where the Danes set up a trading station and the Danish fortress Dansborg.

In 1621, a Danish merchant ship left Tranquebar and sailed almost directly east. It landed at the Siamese settlements of Mergui and Tenasserim and, as such, the first contact between Denmark and Siam was a reality 🇹🇭🤝🇩🇰

Today, Danes celebrate Sankt Hans Aften (Saint John's Eve) 🇩🇰🎉🔥🧙‍♀️

In Denmark, Sankt Hans Aften is a celebration marking midsummer and the evening brings people together in the wish for a peaceful year to come. Danes often meet with family and friends, and if the weather allows it they go to their local bonfire venue.

Out of tradition and old superstition the Sankt Hans bonfires are often adorned by an effigy of a straw witch symbolizing evilness and malice. The story goes that when the witch is burnt, she flies off with all evil intentions to Mount Bloksbjerg in Germany, which was thought to be the location of witch gatherings on the night of Sankt Hans.

Happy Sankt Hans Aften!

𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖..?
Did you know that Denmark was heavily involved in establishing electricity in Thailand more than 120 years ago? 🇩🇰🇹🇭 🔌💡

And that today's Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) in Thailand is a result of this?

Electricity was first introduced in Thailand in 1884 when Field Marshal Chaophraya Surasakdimontri purchased two electric generators from Britain as a birthday gift to His Majesty King Rama V.

The demand for more widespread electricity quickly grew and in 1897 an American company was formed to supply the whole city of Bangkok.
This operation failed and in 1898, The Siam Electricity Company was established by Dane Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu. The company was registered in Denmark and had another Dane, Aage Westenholz, as a director. Westenholz later became regarded as one of the first foreign pioneers developing the electricity system in Bangkok.

The company and its power plant were located at Wat Lieb and became the first to provide electricity directly to the public. It was a thermal power plant using logs, coal, oil, and husk as the fuel.

In 1939 the company’s name was changed to Thailand Electricity Corporation Company Ltd. and, when its concession expired in 1950, it was taken over by the Thai government and renamed Bangkok Electricity Authority.
Later it was renamed once more and got the name we know today - Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) - which stands as yet another great example of historical Thai-Danish collaboration 🇹🇭🤝🇩🇰
