Less than one week to go!
On 18 November, the Danish-led conference 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 takes place.

Digital tools have increasingly become the weapons of choice against democracy and Denmark leads the initiative 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 to make tech work for democracy and human rights, not against them.

The virtual conference, which brings together participants from all over the world and international speakers from multilateral organisations, tech-companies and civil society, is open to all interested participants.

Denmark and Thailand have had strong historical collaboration within education and science 🇩🇰🇹🇭
Many Thais have studied in Denmark and through decades, Danish science expeditions have travelled to Thailand to conduct shared Thai-Danish research.

On November 10, Danish Ambassador Jon Thorgaard, attended the opening ceremony of the annual National Science and Technology Fair in Bangkok.

During the event, famous Danish brand LEGO was showcased, and the Danish Ambassador had the opportunity to introduce the LEGO Education line, which promotes playful hands-on learning, to Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, who presided over the ceremony.

On this day, the Danish Church in Thailand was founded 🇩🇰🇹🇭

Over the last decades, the tourist boom in Thailand has created tens of thousands of individual Thai-Danish connections. Many Danes in Thailand have carved out businesses while others have chosen to settle in a country they fell in love with while on holiday.

Due to the large number of Danes living in or visiting Thailand, a Danish church was established on this day in 2017. In March 2018, the first Danish priest, Christa Lund Herum, was appointed.

The main purpose of the Danish church is to promote Danish culture and Danish traditions among Danes and their families in Thailand through a wide range of activities and events and to offer a place where young people can seek good advice, support and social community when "home" is far away.
In addition, the Danish Church offers services such as baptisms, blessings of marriages, confirmations and memorial services at funerals.

The Danish Church is located in Bangkok, but operates throughout entire Thailand.

With the global climate summit - COP26 – coming up, Denmark 🇩🇰 continues to work to finalise the outstanding goals of the Paris Agreement: Green energy islands, wind energy and solar energy are some of the solutions we are implementing to reduce greenhouse gas.

Did you know that Denmark🇩🇰, in 2020, passed one of the most ambitious acts on reducing greenhouse emissions in the world – The climate act.

The Climate Act commits future Danish governments to continue the climate efforts towards #netzero by 2050.

On this day the first commercial flight from Denmark to Thailand took off 🇩🇰🇹🇭✈️

Well into the 20th century, strong trade along the shipping routes formed the relationship between Denmark and Thailand, but this changed in 1949 when the first SAS flight left from Copenhagen to Bangkok.
A route, which at the time “only” took 36 hours and had several stops along the way 😊

Due to Denmark’s strong interests in Thailand, the route quickly became popular and demonstrated the need for easier access between the two countries.
SAS continued to fly to Thailand for the next 64 years, up until 2013, and SAS thereby played an important role in strengthening the Thai-Danish relations in more modern times.

16 October, 1968, marks yet another example of significant Thai-Danish collaboration – the Phuket Marine Biological Centre 🇩🇰🤝🌊🇹🇭

Science has played a big role in the shared Thai-Danish history and the scientific partnership has involved everything from archaeology, biodiversity, botany and marine biology.

Following a series of Thai-Danish science missions in the first half of the 20th century the idea to establish a marine research facility arose during a Thai-Danish expedition in 1966.
Two years later, on October 16th, a bilateral agreement was signed by the governments of Thailand and Denmark, establishing the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC).

The main objective of the PMBC was to carry out research on marine and coastal resources in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand and to educate the young generation and the public regarding the importance of sustainable uses of natural resources. The studies included systematic ecological studies, oceanography and studies on marine pollution with emphasis on mangrove, seagrass bed, and coral reef ecosystems.

Over the years, the research from PBMC has provided Thailand with a lot of important information on better ways to both use and protect the marine resources and has created a new generation of Thai marine scientists that are highly respected and sought after in international academic circles.

Since 1975, the Phuket Marine Biological Centre has been managed solely by Thailand, but Danish researchers continue to carry out scientific work and assist as advisers for the PBMC.

On this day, the inaugural meeting of the Danish-Thai Chamber of Commerce (DTCC) was held at the Danish embassy in Bangkok 🇩🇰🤝🇹🇭

The idea of a Danish-Thai Chamber of Commerce, conceived by Danish Ambassador Mogens Isaksen, Peter Miller, Maersk Bangkok Branch, and Poul Weber, Berli Jucker Public Co., Ltd, had first been launched in May 1991 and in June 1992, the Chamber received approval from the Thai Ministry of Commerce. A few months later, the founding meeting took place.

The chamber was established with a purpose not only to support and increase collaboration between Danish and Thai companies, but also to further promote and expand trade between Thailand and Denmark.

The 400-year history between Denmark and Thailand started with trade in 1621 and as such, DTCC continues to build on the shared Thai-Danish history, strengthening trade between the two countries today and in the future.
