The tram in Bangkok around 1931.

DID YOU KNOW…?
Did you know that Denmark played a major role in the establishment of the first tramway system in Thailand?

In 1888, The Bangkok Tramway Company was set up to build the first ever tramway in Bangkok. In charge were the Danes Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu as company chairman and Aage Westenholz as company director.
The construction began in June 1888 and the line was in operation by September the same year. The tramway, which was 6 kilometres long and ran along Charoen Krung Road, used ponies to haul the carriages. The company had an operational fleet of 300 ponies and it took four ponies to haul one carriage.
Initially, the tramway did not gain popularity due to high prices and sympathy for the horses used and in 1892, the tramway system was taken over by a Danish company.
In 1894, this company, with the help of Aage Westenholz and his great knowledge about electricity, electrified the tramway system. This some 5 years before such electric system was first seen in Denmark.

The electric tramway system in Bangkok became a great success and by the year 1901, the route network extended over 20 kilometres.

16 January 1962 - Official opening of the Thai-Danish Dairy Farm

ON THIS DAY:
16 January 1962

On this day, an auspicious ceremony took place as part of the official opening of the Thai-Danish Dairy Farm. A project that emphasises the strong historical collaboration between Denmark and Thailand.

King Bhumibol (King Rama IX) had respectfully invited King Frederik IX to formally unveil the nameplate of the Thai-Danish Dairy Farm.

As part of his opening speech King Frederik IX said:
“This ceremony is a milestone because it marks the start of the first Danish project of direct technical corporation with another country. All such arrangements have previously been made through international organisations. It gives me particular satisfaction that this first project of corporation is starting in Thailand where my family and my people have had and still have so many friends”

Today, the Thai-Danish Dairy Farm still produces the famous Thai-Denmark milk brand, which is sold all over Thailand. In addition, other dairy products such as yoghurt and ice cream have also been developed.

State visit to Thailand - 12 January 1962

ON THIS DAY:
12 January 1962

On this day, King Frederik IX of Denmark and Queen Ingrid arrived in Thailand on a state visit where they reviewed Danish activities in Thailand.
The last days of the royal visit were devoted to a private stay at the Royal residence in Chiang Mai with King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit.
On the way back to Denmark, the Danish King and Queen gave an interview to a Danish newspaper. King Frederik expressed the visit to Thailand had been a true fairy tale and an adventure of a lifetime for him and Queen Ingrid.
The welcome given by the King and Queen of Thailand and the Thai people had exceeded anything the Royal Danish couple had ever experienced.

2021 marks the 400-year anniversary of relations between Denmark and Thailand 🇩🇰🇹🇭

The earliest recorded visit to Siam was in 1621 when a Danish ship, captained by Dutchman Roland Crappé, travelled to the port of Mergui in Tenasserim, a part of Siam at the time, where he and his crew were granted permission to trade.

Part of the permission letter written by Okya Chaiyathibodi, Regent of Tenasserim, read:

“Tenasserim has granted permission to foreign traders to buy and sell goods as well as conduct commercial activities here. The city shall also permit travel as far as to the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, where the Court of Ayutthaya shall facilitate all types of businesses conducted by foreigners.
I wish to establish a close relationship with the King of Denmark through Tenasserim, and we are ready to do anything to help strengthen the relationship between our two nations”

This event constitutes the very beginning of the relationship between Denmark and Thailand.

Today is International Human Rights Day.

In Denmark, most human rights are secured by the Danish constitution as well as international conventions and treaties. But Danish society is also committed to promoting human rights internationally.

During recent years, Denmark has been particularly engaged in the fight to end the use of torture, and is considered a world leader in this matter.

Denmark might be a small country, but there is a strong belief that we can make a difference in the world by setting a good example.

58 years ago a technical cooperation project between the Thai and Danish Governments resulted in the creation of Thai Danish Dairy Farm. If the word "Denmark" is mentioned, Thai people will immediately associate with Thai-Denmark milk. It is one of the largest footprints Danes have made in Thailand among many other things.

Ambassador Jon Thorgaard was honored to visit the farm and discuss future Thai-Danish cooperation in dairy sector with Dairy Farming Promotion Organization of Thailand DPO. Accompanied the Ambassador yesterday was Mr. Chatri Moonstan, our Senior Commercial Advisor and Lene Moelsted Jensen, Minister-Counsellor (Food, Agriculture and Fisheries).
