Learning from the Yom River Basin in Phrae 🌊

As part of our ongoing research collaboration between Resilience Collective, MIT Urban Risk Lab, Chulalongkorn University, and the Hydro – Informatics Institute (HII), we visited communities across Phrae to better understand how water moves through the province and how communities manage and live with repetitive flooding.

Bringing together local knowledge, spatial data, and on-the-ground experience to better understand water, risk, and resilience in Phrae and the whole water basin.

Climate resilience starts with local knowledge.

COPIN is a community mapping platform that helps communities document local assets, climate risks, vulnerable groups, and opportunities for adaptation. By turning local knowledge into actionable data, COPIN helps bridge the gap between community needs and resilience planning.

Developed through a collaboration between MIT Urban Risk Lab, Resilience Collective Thailand, and Community Organization Development Institute (CODI), COPIN continues to evolve as a tool for strengthening community resilience through mapping, data, and collaboration.

Concrete is visible. Knowledge is not.

When discussing flood resilience, conversations often focus on what we can see: dams, drainage systems, embankments, and other forms of physical infrastructure.

But behind every effective intervention is a less visible layer of information, coordination, and learning.

As climate uncertainty increases, building resilience means strengthening not only our physical systems, but also our capacity to understand and respond to change.

What kinds of investments do you think are most needed for long-term flood resilience?

From 8–10 December, Resilience Collective (RC), together with Community Organization Development Institute (CODI), visited parts of Hat Yai to survey the flood impacts in urban and rural areas, speak with residents, document early recovery challenges and test platforms for Post-Disaster Assesment (PDA).

Across the South, provinces like Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Phatthalung, Trang, and Nakhon Si Thammarat faced similar flooding, while parts of Ayutthaya, Chachoengsao, and Nakhon Pathom in Central Thailand were also affected — showing the scale of overlapping impacts.

Hat Yai, an economic hub in the Southern province of Songkhla, Thailand faced its worst flood in 300 years after extreme rainfall began on 19–20 November 2025. Water levels surged rapidly on 21 November, and the city entered its most critical stage on 24–25 November, when evacuations were ordered and widespread urban damage unfolded. Record-breaking rainfall — over 630 mm in just three days — overwhelmed drainage systems and sent runoff from surrounding basins straight into the city. By 28 November, water finally began to recede, revealing the full scale of impact.

Communities faced rising water, power disruptions, damaged homes, mobility challenges, and losses to daily livelihoods.

Even after the floodwaters drained, the streets were left covered in mud, debris, and damaged goods, slowing recovery for families and small businesses.

Grateful to share that our project Happinning.city: Urban Festival Interactive Map has been selected as one of the five finalists for the CEA Creative Excellence Awards 2025 in the Creative Technology Awards category.

The Creative Economy Agency (CEA), a public organization under the Prime Minister’s Office, advances Thailand’s creative economy and launched the Creative Excellence Awards to recognize outstanding creative work across the country.

Happinning.city was created to help urban dwellers and visitors easily explore events around them through a simple, engaging interface, while also promoting urban open data and strengthening the feedback loop between cities, people, and event hosts. The platform reflects our commitment to exploring how technology can support urban regeneration, community connection, and more livable cities.

A heartfelt thank you to our past collaborators: the CEA Bangkok Design Week Team and BMA (Bangkok Metropolitan Administration), for their trust, support, and shared vision. Honored for this recognition, and excited to keep building tools that help cities thrive. 🌆📍

โปรเจกต์ของเรา Happinning.city: Urban Festival Interactive Map ได้รับคัดเลือกเป็นหนึ่งใน 5 ทีมสุดท้าย ของรางวัล CEA Creative Excellence Awards 2025 สาขา Creative Technology Awards
